I got a sudden urge to play space games. Simulators, rpgs and whatever (Not strategy though). Prefferebly where you have a ship. What is there to recommend these days?
Well, it's a little old and some of the voice acting is awful, but I quite enjoyed Nexus: The Jupiter Incident. If you don't mind strategy games, I'd definitely recommend Sins of a Solar Empire for real time (haven't played the expansion, but it's scenario-based as opposed to a campaign, and Sword of the Stars for turn-based.
edit: replied before you edited to state no strategy games.
I just bought this one. Shattered Horizon.
I love it, team based shooter in zero gravity. Has nice ranking system.
Capture location game types along with skirmishes and teams.
Gameplay is addicting.

Have you heard if there is any word on level editor in the future? I've wanted to pick this game up, and that would help push me towards doing so....
I wish they would. But no talk about a level editor for shattered horizon from what I know.
But there releasing some free map packs in the near future.
echoing freespace 2 and freelancer.
there's some fanmade graphics overhaul of freespace floating about the interweb too which looked pretty snazzy last time I saw
Privateer reminds me of Escape Velocity, which was a fun series by Ambrosia. Which in turn makes me think of Space Rangers 2, which was funny and weird.
I really like EVE, but that's completely different. Seconding System Shock, at least SS2, though they are more like scifi FPS/RPGs. But still, amazing games.

I heard somewhere they where thinking about releasing an editor or are releasing one...I'll see if I can find where I read that.

"Modding the game fully or making level from scratch is another thing, and much harder - we don't have at this point "unified simple to use single editor that does it all", so it's hard for anyone outside the company to set up working dev environment. You'd need XSI for starters.
But you never know, and we do fully understand the value of modding community (some of us came from those)."
They have also said before that if the community clamors for mod support they may inlcude it in the future

Good ones, and ones that don't suck:
Freelancer, DarkStar One, X3, Tarr Chronicles

I'm still waiting on the new Jumpgate..should be cool.

You don't actually need anything other than this, but might aswell try them if you have some free time.
Starlancer is good too, but really old already.
Mass Effect
Knights of the Old Republic
I liked Jumpgate and Hegemonia as well.
If you go Strategy anyways, I'd highly recommend Relic Entertainment's 'Homeworld' (One of the most underrated games ever made).

I loved that game, especially with my Thrustmaster gear.
I wonder if anyone remembers that game..... oh man, I'm old.
