Hey guys, I am pretty new to the polycount community, but I figured I would join up to participate in the Unearthly 2009 "End Level" competition in the 3D category. Well more specificly the 3D game engine category.
About the Team:
Its just me... I know that sounds crazy but my schedule is rather sparatic with a 2 year old at home and another one on the way. I am a pretty experianced 3D user and have been working as an independent game developer for the past 8 years releasing several games for the PC/Mac/Linus, iPhone and some other platforms. Much of this work has been done with the Torque game engine (most recently would be the Undercity lighting demo level for Torque3D) so I feel that it levels out the playing field for me for running solo.
The Team Name"
Its actually a reference to a nickname I call my son. I thought it would keep things fun.
The Project Name:
I choose "End of World" for my entry. I know that its pretty generic and that there are probably other guys with similar entry names but thats of no real concern, the only thing that matters is the end result that you get.
Other Notes/Information:
Like I said I havent done one of these before so I will try to fill in information as I go along.
And now onto the project...
When I first thought of this project what initially came to my mind was to go and do a larger outdoor environment that give off a feeling of doom and destruction (as opposed to success and fluffy bunnies). My reasoning for this was that I wanted to sell the idea of "end level" by trying to give the sense of the ultimate evil that you are trying to defeat. It also helps too that I could really sell the lighting and do some fun little effects.
Initially my thought here was to go medieval, but I wasnt ever really sold on it. Luckily my parents just returned from a nice trip of the Meditaranian Sea with all sorts of neat tour books. One of which was of Ephesus, Turkey which has a wide range of Roman ruins. After flipping through the book my mind began to race, I was inspired to do an Roman themed setup with a long street of tall collums that leads the persons eyes to the temple at the end of the row. In the sky above the temple would be the "World Ender" a large black hole of sorts that was pulling elements of the environment around it inside.
With that said here is my first bit of concept art. I am not much of a concept artist so I tried to keep things simple and give more of a feeling of the layout and lines that I could work with. I am certain my perspective sucks, but its just a concept.
So that's where I started. I have a few other little bits of sketches that I have done of collums and items that I will upload later. As well as an image or two of the 3D models I have started working on. Most of the 3D images will likely come from Torque3D itself since its a great tool for rapidly prototyping art, I might have the occassional Max or Mudbox render though to sell the 3D art until I have my final lighting ready in Torque3D.
