These are sextacular and dont disappoint in anyway... if anything when they arrived I was so shocked at how good they were I thought id gone too far. Fair amount of connections too - people have them connected to xboxes and dvd players if you read around, ive not bothered as i never stray from my pc haha.
I'm not a rabid audiophile by any means, but if you really want quality, Altec Lansing is supposed to be the best. Logitech seems to be frowned upon by people in the know.
If you just want affordable, any 30-50$ Creative or Logitech set will be fine
I got a set of 5.1 altec-lansing speakers. They rule more than any other speakers I've ever owned before. Then again, like xoliul, I'm no audiophile. The only downside is the fact I can't get most surround sound in games to work right. It either comes out of the wrong speakers, or I can't hear anything but background stuff coming out of the front speakers. But surround sound works perfect on movies... Weird.
I got a set of Altec - sound great, but out the box the headphone jack doesn't work, and I'll be buggered if I'm going all the way back to east london just to return the bastards.
Sound quality is okay though, compared to the previous two sets of logitech speakers I had, which were great for gaming/movies but sucked for music.
Actually, forgot to mention that I'm gonna be hooking my comp up to my new tv shortly, so I'll be running the audio through my home entertainment center soon.
See, im a headphone skeptic... I have those Sennheiser HD595's and they sound A BIT... a TINY bit better than my £25 Sony headphones. In hindsight, id not buy them again, id go for something with better bass.
Glib - those headphones interest me, if theyre bassy enough. I just find myself enjoying the speaker experience so much more... headphones cant shake my floor after all. I find the whole audiophile thing a bit too snobbish. It seems like the price gap is fucking astronomical for what will only be a small amount of fidelity in the right environment and right quality audio.
I let the bass go boom. Never really knew THX certified would sound so good. Great for music and anything else. Played every game I have for PC again just to hear the sound on these puppies.

Jackwhat - I have to say mate; that if you find these only slightly better better than the sony set you say one of 2 things is causing it:
a. You are partially deaf :poly124:
or (the most likely) b. your not driving them with a good enough amp. Higher end headphones require more umph.
I don't want to sound like an arse; and if your just plugging both sets of phones into an iPod for instance you might not hear too much of a difference. But asides from that; I have to take the plunge and say your wrong (strong words) - a £20 set of Sony's will simply not compare with a mid-high end set of Sennheisers (or other high end set of cans i.e shure).
As a side note: The Bass on the 595s is slightly mellow; but gives a nice rounded listening experience while still providing enough punch to compliment the brilliantly crisp mids and highs - *in my opinion*
I've got a er, Creative xfx soundcard and whatever the z5500's have (its a little hub where you plug headphones n shit into). I've read about people suggesting amps and so on but the volume isnt the problem at all. It just doesnt sound like £110 - My speakers are clear, loud and really good and only £80 more expensive... I just dont get where the money is going haha.
But seriously, my z5500 hub thing can get my headphones so loud (without losing quality) I really would go deaf
^
My Sony headphones - The difference in quality really isnt noticable, while the sound ... is "clearer", theyre more comfortable but i dunno... I'm not willing to pay more than my headphones on an amp haha, im skeptical. Probably should of done more research before buying as im a bass nut. (Unless ofc an amp makes bass deeper then im ready to listen! Still, wont beat an 11" sub for depth :E)
- I'm side with sicsided as well.. In terms of wattage and driver size, those logitech speakers are cheaper than the m-audio ones and probably pack more umph. Then again im naive and the numbers mean more to me than a brand name.
I only find quality relevant in headphones, I have a harder time differentiating sound quality between speakers.. I have a nice set of headphones, but almost don't use them at all anymore because I don't need to be quiet.
Any speakers will do, mine were $30 and sound pretty great. I use my PC for all of my media watching and I use them for my Xbox too.
Just walk into a store a buy some that look good...
I used to have these hooked up, but i've migrated them to my TV as they were way too fucking loud and powerful for a small office, better for living room/movie watching etc. The sound coming out of my aquos speakers is pretty terrible, so i just pipe it all through these. Logitech sells a little converter from 5.1 PC to RCA for like $8
I'd go some kind of 5.1 Logitech, lots of reliable options there. I run the [ame=http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Z-5300-5-1-Channel-Surround-Speaker/dp/B0000C20R9]Z5300[/ame], 280 watts RMS. Its an older model, been running great for going on 5 years. Used to run as 7.1 with additional stereo hookup for the rear channels, before my CPU fried taking the mobo with it (unrelated)
A quick rule of thumb: crank it up and play a round of your favorite FPS-- if your neighbors haven't phoned in a shooting, get a bigger system
Mine will fool a roommate, but not the Hendersons halfway down the block. Would be plenty for your needs though, I hardly ever go more than 1/3rd volume.

Anyone have any experience with M-Audio? They are rated pretty highly it seems.
As for being an audiophile, the hell with a stereo. Pick up a iBasso D2 amp and a set of Audio Technica ATH-M50s.
That's my work setup and I would pit it against any sub-$2k stereo setup any day.
Hell ya Flaagan, I have the x-140's as well. They are just pure awesome. Great sound, and cheap. Five of my friends and myself own them.

Currently I'm driving a pair of Sennheiser HD595s :-
with an Asus Xonar STX Headphone Card - Sublime sound... still want some some speakers for that gaming *punch* though
edit: link to card if anyone is interested - I'd reccomend it if you have a nice set of phones.

try purchasing:
an Ibasso d2 (already mentioned in this thread)

a Pro-Ject Headbox amp

I do a fair bit of music recording so it's nice to have some studio-quality monitors.

Funnily enough they're the headphones that get dished out at work - and they're not that bad for the price
