After years of playing Doom I am eagerly looking forward to this new release of technology, id tech 5
http://www.doom4news.com/ it will be a bonanza!
Recently I heard the release date was to be 2009 but that has now been delayed, I hope that the Bethesda buyout produces the same kind of quality we are used to as fps players, you with me?
and hey, if anybody has any images of doom 4 please post!!!

Do we know if the story is a continuation of the one set out in Doom3, or is it a standalone scenario?
I'd like to see them transition from the horror genre, to some sort of genre that more closely mirrors the doom comic. As in, you're the scary one.
I must not be much of a fan - I didn't even know that there was a Doom comic.... :poly136:
An obligatory Google search turned up this, for anyone else that hasn't seen it before:

You're right, aesir - that would be interesting.
and only 1 cyberdemon was lame. the previous dooms had you fighting 4-5 cyberdemons simultaneously. now that shit had your hairs standing on end..
haha, I know right? I think it more closely fits ID's style too. They aren't the subtle type, which is something I think good horror demands.

Xenobond - Had no idea there was a Doom comic and I've been a fan since the first game:\
It's a bit of old news now I know but here's John Carmack talking about the new engine...

Bit more news on Doom 4...

You Tube had me rickrolled a few times trying to find stuff, so not that much to report, seems things are really hush hush.
Well, maybe a similar story set in the Doom universe, with new characters, locations and scenarios? You're right, it is confusing - but will no doubt be awesome.
Not sure about another movie, though. Might be alright if they stay true to the Doom premise of demons and not diseased mutants or whatever crap they went for in the first flick.
I think it's one big texture for each pass.
I managed to find a screenshot of Doom 4. :D
Look forward to it!
OIC- was wondering how they worked in all the complex shaders and shizzle. Guess will wait and see how the pipeline works once that racing game thing comes out.
I found a better D4 shot on IGN - don't click if you don't want spoilers..

IMO there's too much fog/corona going on and far too much noise on textures.
It seems they will use Id Tech '6'...
http://www.pcper.com/article.php?aid=532
And also it seems they will be using voxels, then maybe graphics will look this way...

I'm sure I read Doom 4 won't be on Mars, but Earth. I just can't find the link, so...
I could be mistaken.
There is no tech 6 yet and even though they've done a lot of research into voxels it doesn't mean that they're also going to use it. At least I would not be so sure, there are some huge technical issues with the thing... for example I can't really see how they'd build animated characters or anything moving in the environment with voxels. And while it looked OK in Outcast, mixing lowpoly normal mapped models and a voxel landscape would probably look kinda bad in HD res.
Then there's DX11 and tesselation + displacement, which - if programmable - could also be worth looking into, at least on the next gen consoles...
If I remember correctly, this system is based on voxels. (They have animation with a soft body overlay, i believe) If they can somehow get this going in doom 4, i imagine the gore will be very entertaining.
The displacement mapping would be amazing if they could incorporate that, your average alpha mapped chain link fence would look never like anything you've ever seen before in realtime. That would be sweeeeet.
I remember a demo just like that one with the GMan from Half-Life. I will die a happy man if developers incorporate that style of violence into shooters.
Blood puffs aren't doing it for me, and the weak at heart who wouldn't want the dismemberment. Still questions me why they play a game where the sole purpose is to defeat the opponent by blasting them with a gun in the first place.
Doom has always been my favorite game series. Good Ol' ID Software.
So when are they gonna remake Commander Keen! =P
That's the Zbrush file from the Dominance war 3 winner. He gives that model for free on his website.
:P
I don't think so, Doom 4 is going to use the ID Tech5 engine. Same engine as Rage, however it will be approximately 3x the detail since its targeted for a 30FPS game and not 60FPS.
I think also Doom 4 is going to be more of a continuation or something. Its back on earth I think. I don't know for sure. But I'm pretty sure it will be on the ID Tech 5 engine. Nevertheless its going to be awesome!

@ MonkeyMHz: Yep, Id Tech 5. It seems we will need to wait maybe to Doom 5 for some voxels dance?...

No message = No secret!
woohoo! some news although I need an translator http://doom4geliyor.blogspot.com/2009/02/doom-4-motion-capture.html
This maybe a screenshot? http://doom4geliyor.blogspot.com/2009_08_23_archive.html Don't remember this from Doom 3 and the dead guy looks too detailed...
Edit: my bad, saved the picture and it was labelled Doom 3.
Check the dropdown for more Doom 4 related stuff though I hope you speak Serbian then you can tell me what it says.
Next...
I read that they are using a hollywood weapons guru for some mocap here http://wire.ggl.com/2009/02/09/the-doom-4-mo-cap-interview-first-production-shots-revealed/ it's in the comments but the actual interview with id was removed at their request and there was a real screenshot circulating too but now it's even gone from Googles cache
Dammit id I need my Doom 4 news fix NOW!
/impatient
In my last playtrough, i took more than 500 screenshots, they are all on my ref folder and I use them a lot for references, especially when I'm modeling sub-d hard surfaces.
I'm soooo looking forward to d4.
The first one is about the guy they hired for mo-cap obviously. It also contains Brad Hawkins' comments about the game. He says that the game is set in a post-apocalyptic world and involves the simultaneous survival efforts of both civilians and the military.
The second one says:
Todd Hollenshead said that they did not show Doom 4 at Quakecon because what they showed would be so much different than the final visual quality of the game.
Also, the blog says Doom 4 material will be shown at Quakecon 2010.
[HP] cool! Had a recent playthrough myself to get a feel for some stuff too, might have to get some captures in windowed mode
EmAr thankyou a new character element with gameplay sounds interesting, that's what I missed with Doom 3, actually wanting to save one of the scientists haha.
Heard about the preview in 2010, they def aren't taking any chances, just wondering when the hype and advertisements will start? My mouth is watering
No, I haven't read that interview before - thanks for posting! And yeah, it looks beautiful, but then again, I'm sure we'd expect nothing less from id.
And thanks for all the kind words,
Doom4 is turning out to be a great game to work on.
