It's difficult to tell what's going on in this render... and it seems like the focus was on rendering more than it was on form/composition/theme... which is fine when doing a color/lighting comp, but the color/lighting comp should be in context with the theme/scale/composition of your scene otherwise you may as well just looked for reference on google for color/lighting mood.
If this is the composition/scale reference you're going to use, I would suggest taking another stab at it, and getting some tutorials on perspective and general thumbnailing.
on a general note, the elements being so hard to read make the scene look like an unbalanced mix of ancient architecture with sci-fi lighting... or those lights you can buy on infomercials late at night after all "The L-Word".
It would be interesting to see also what you're using for reference. A lot of times, a good collection of reference pictures and a collage of them is better than doing a concept painting.
Pull some references and post a reference sheet for what you're going for, and it may be more clear... allowing people to provide more feedback/comments on the idea and the ways to approach it.
First off let me start by saying, there is no conceivable way right now that I will get this done.
As soon as I posted this thread I got an art test.
So the contest took a back seat.
So needless to say I've only given this project about 4 days now. But who cares right ? There will be the rest of my life after the Unearthly is done. Not like anybody wins anyway LOL.
So here is what I did. sort of blocked out the building frames , roads and rocks. Then I got side tracked in Unreal That is until the wife got home and made a scene about my son watching . He heh !
Right off the bat I noticed
1 . texture direction needed to be fixed, so the normal maps would treat the light the same. So I made a simple arrow texture to make sure they were going the right way again.
2. The level was boring as shit to play so I will be enabling the mechanical roots collisions to walk onto. Then move them around for more walk able surfaces.
In this image I have some more of the layout.
1. just a simple zbrush sculpt for the background rocks. Using tilde-key , I made it tillable.
2 these are just some spikes I will be adding to the scene. Letting the player know. he/she better not fall off.
3. These are the mechanical roots. This isn't a full rep what they will look like, that will be figured out in the modeling process.
oh yes p.s.
thank you nfrrtycmplx thank for your incite.
" there's been a bit of tom foolery with the avatars lately"
LOL funny
thanks for the offer, there is still a bit of work to be done before I take Lights seriously, Later today or tomorrow I suppose
yello - the Beauty shot that you have been seeing
blue- the playing field (walk able surfaces)
orange _seed 1 of 2
highlighted green - new addition of alien type lights
well it looks well made and like theres alot going on there but I cant tell what it is, might want to focus the viewers attention with something, different in design or lighting etc?
plus I must apologize , I am usually a bit more chatty during these competitions . I was really hoping to connect with more people on Polycount. There has just been a bunch of activity outside of this contest. Made it difficult to circle the threads as much as I wanted.
That said, what I have seen here is really good stuff.
Congrats on finishing! This one fell off my radar much for the same reason, just not enough free time for thread browsing... I really really like it, nice work!
Yeah big congrats on finishing. I really like the shapes and silhouettes you've got going on in your scene. I think you did the smart thing by just keeping on working.
odd
this pict was deleted from my picasa google folder
and it's actually what I ended up using as the beauty shot one
should be working now (on previous page)
Vig, big thanks !!!
I hope to hang out at some point, I met oXYnary, at one of the local meetings. He had good things to say about you. good job on finishing your piece ! Well done !
Ben Apuna , thank you for the kind words, I wish I had some Hawaiin weather right about now

I did some of the root layout, walking style, and design style
made a texture for the building, and completed the mapping for one of them
this is the current layout, I deleted the lookout towers completely they read better to me as a castle . It also gave the entrance more meaning
more to come ...
few updates
gave the road a bit more bend, and added lights to it
built a wall that surrounds the entire pit, though I am only focusing on this section till the contest is over.
moved the fortress to the left and back and increased the size of the entrance building for better composition
now it can all be viewed in engine
to explain : it is what the Alien ship drops in order to create the Bio Mech Roots that you see in the scene
Together they act as a planetary TerraFormer, so that the evaders can inhabit the planet
I cranked the emmisive again on the mech root, just toying with it
probably put it back down again, donno
anywho, think I'm off to my friends for a beer
but your right there needs a bit of contrast
thanks for the encouragement
did you avatar just change ? or am I seeing shit again

You're not trippin'
Would be interesting to see a shot of just your lighting, might be able to give you some tips.

It's been a long day
back to the beauty shot for a bit
just wanted to tap the rest of the scene a bit first
but here is an update for the beauty shot
man I got to make up my mind quick
congratulations everyone !!!
that means a lot
