3dsmax - viewing normal map error

I have Max 8 and want to create / view normal maps, but they display as solid black in the viewport. I'm sure I have everything setup correctly but when I check "DX Display of Standard Material" it goes black. When I uncheck it, the diffuse displays correctly. (the normal map texture looks correct too - and when I render, the normal map is fine)

Could this be a video card problem? Max runs fine otherwise

3ds Max 8 (SP3)
Nvidia Quadro 1400 FX (do I need a video card upgrade? - I have latest drivers btw)
Win XP SP2
