Hey, what's up everyone!=) I decided to give it a try this time!
I'm actually very excited about this! And I'm glad to be representing the polycount team, 'cause I really feel thankfull for all the knowledge you guys share.
So. Down to business. The scene I'm going to do is supposed to be the place where the story of a person, who wasn't left the cnace to walkaway, ends. You know there are times in life, when people are inconvinient with the truth, when they hardly care about what's wirght, but just what's profitable for them. When your truth is not profitable you're made to think you're wrong, you're crazy if you're persistant enough. I've been through that kind of situation to some extent, but I've had a chance to walk away from it. But what if you can't and what if the bets are too high.
Sort of a Max Payne story, which probably I won't describe in more detail for now.
Except for the place where it ends. Well maybe the characters ends, but the story will probably live on.
It's going to be a street. The kind that's open for traffic on weekdays, but becomes strictly pedestrian on weekends. A wide street in a capital city, that ends with a huge capitolium like building, thats going to be the center of attention. It's the place the character is going, to have his voice heared. But, considered a serious threat he'll be treated as one, and won't make to the doors of the building he's going to. Basically gamewise this would be the last level, where player is supposed to die. To be struggling with all he's got but still loose. When you're low on ammo, when you know your characters's wounded all over, hiding behind some cover you see outnumbering enemies closing in, but still hope and think that you're supposed to get out of this mess alive. And I'd probably made you play over and over again until you can settle with the thought that you're dead. All that struggle, was just to loose.
I'm sorry if it's concidered too dark of an ending. I just find it serious. And very inretesting to explore in game. To trigger some emotional parts of your mind, make you do what you don't expect, make you analize your own behaviour and think how things happen in life, and if games are all about winning. Or is loosing a victory too, just in another way. I think such a thing could deliver some memorable dramatic moments.
You know, thats the kind of ending that Shadow of the Colossus had. When you keep questioning yourself after the end if the thing could've been diferent.
Visually I'm aiming for a mixture old europe and and new industrial styles. Like a mixture of Fable with Geras of War and Advent children.
I like the way it sounds for now but i realize that there are tons of work ahead and I hope to pull it off at least on a decent level.
I really want to get as much knowledge fro this as possible, so please give me hell with your comments and critics. This would bemore then appreciated!=)))
I'll be doing this in Unreal Engine 3. I've already got some stuff in production.
But here's the only picture i've got for now - the only prop exported to unreal.)
sorry it's not much, bit I hope to make it up to you guys in the future.)
fooof.gotta go. Cheers to every body and the best of luck.) Surprisingly all this writing got myself a bit more inspired.)
oh. and by the way. If I'll have time I'll try to add a bit of a twist on the whole challenge topic. Hopefully.)
have a nice day everybody and smile please

Good luck friend cant wait to see more
Sooooo, here are some props and materaisl I did.
(check out the full size if you'd like)
I've been very anal about texture space optimisation. Well and keeping polycount fit too. I guess I was just completely anal%) . Lamps and fire hydrant share the same texture for example and the space is reused extensivly. Oh I know a lame thing about it. I wasnt able to polypaint the stuff in mudbox, for it found such uvs unusable. But I'm just being a dumbass actually. Nobody gives a damn about you optimisation unless you can make a pretty picture. Make an ugly picture stating that optimisation was you reason and no client will accept it. Whatever reasons you have - if it's ugly - it's unacceptable. So making it pretty is what you have to concentrate on. And then optimise if you can, but not the other way around.
I really wanted to do some sort of ornament on the sideway tiles, but when I did, I figured out It looked more like a medievil kitchen floor or something like it. So I decided to leave the ornament on the specular predominantly. like the stones have been specialy polished there. I think it looks kinda interesting.
Oh, speaking about speculars! It really cool how unreal mat editor lets you use different chanels of your textures for whatever purpose you may find usefull. For example I used one DXT1 texture that contained speculars of the road, sidewalk tiles, and sidewalk borders in R ,G, B chanels respectivly. But are there any hidden dangers about it? Neverminding that it's not very convinient looking and your spec texture and seeing a mess. I haven't heard of it being made a standart or whatever. But it really seems to make a lot for sencse for me, 'cause you can make your engine work with different channels and then cut by 2/3 you spec map memory expenses. Or, for exmaple a DXT5 texture with and alfa chanel is twice as large as a DXT1. Why not put the alpha map into a specular chanel so you would get it absolutely for free?
I've also got a car in production right now. Which is close to being textured. And after that off to the architecture land . I'll probably spend today scetching some houses and modular elements. And maybe the whole scene too. I know I'm a dumbass, that I didn't make a level blockout from the start, but I've decided to work it other way around and I'll probably do that somewhere in the middle. Just 'cause I felt realy unsure about myself and instead of sitting there and waiting until I finaly realise how will I do this, I started doing things I was sure about. And you know, loading the whole stuff into the engine and setting up a small scene helped me feel the volume and space a bit better, so I have a bit clearer vision of what I want. And plus I gained some knowledge about how this thing works actually, so I now I could do that with a CSG mesh and even run around it. I think I feel more comfortable about doing UEd3 then in 3ds Max. Btw here's the small scene I was talking about:
you can also check out the road texture, that I didn't put into the props list, just 'cause I thought it would look boring and eat up too much space.
Hey,Ubersock, thanks so much for your comment! Your work is looking good too. And yeah, the green was a bad idea from the start. I thought that's also wrong 'cause green color is used to tell you that you are free to go so it probably won't fit with a road block.=))) I was just messing with the UE3 MatEd 'cause this prop has a mask in an alfa channel to tweak that kinda stuff, but I guess I'll get back to it a bit later. And by the way, the roadblcok also has the insides modeled and textured, and it's made of separate peices that are sould fall apart once the damage is taken. But I still have to figure out how I'll amke this work in the engine.
BlvdNights, thanks for the comment, dude. Yeah you're absolutely right. I kinda missed it. I started paying a lot more attention to it whle browsing refernces, so I know how to work around those places. Sooooo thanks!=)
P.s. The smiling guy on the props sheet would be my team logo for now.) hope you like him%-)
Here I am with another update. I'm feeling hungry so I'll try to make this quick^_^
don't forget to chek out the full size.
Here's a pollice car that's gonna be cloned all over the place. The doors can be opened and obiously you can turn off the lights on the roof so that would create some variety(if needed) i hope. It's about 2700 tris, but you could abviosly optimise it more. Or I'd rather say optimise some places to add to the others, but I'm trying to keep myself from redoing stuff I noticed I don't like already. 'Cause I hardly like anything after like a couple of hours once I'm finished with it.=) And I really have to move forward(with the lessons learned). So If in the final picture I'll feel something bothering me I'll go ahead and redo it.
here's a closeup that I made for I don't know what reason.) you can see by the way that there are some minor seams in some places. It's funny that they are not present once you look at your model in the static mesh editor. Once again I'll investigate them if such a nescessity arises futher on.
Btw I'd like to thanks again the guys that helped me out in the UE masterthread, 'cause I couldn't make my car windows transparent. Well now they are, but inside is real dark and that was pretty obvious If you think of it, but I didn't, so I spend som time detailing the interiour which probably would never bee seen.=) but thats fine with me, 'cause it's been entertaining, and most importantly, as we all know doing just enough could never be enough if you're trying to progress to a another level. So here are some car seat shots too.=)
I simply took a noisy leather texture for the diffuse. Baked AO and Normals from the higpoly and then uesd a bit tweaked AO for the specmap. It's seems to me like it turnd out to look lekie leather alright. The polycount for a seat is somewhat close to 190 tris.
I also finaly did my level blockout and modeled the main building. It's almost unvrapped. I'm not rocksolid sure about it's design for know, but I just realised, that I'll have a clearer picture of what I want once have some basic materials on. I'll do some tweaks then if nescessiry.
Any coments or crits would be very appreciated.
So cheers and good luck everyone! Have a nice weekened!
no fancy stuff, I'm too lazy to decorate pictures - I'd rather concentrate on wrapping up the piece already. I really hope to make it on time.
And I'd like to apologize' cause I really suck at lighting and I haven't gotten into it properly. I'm running really low on time so I decided to concentrate on at least setting up the scene.
you may also want to check out the full size, even though I'ts strange how the textures are blurier than they used to be.) Unreal compresses them somehow, but thats pretty much all i know about it, so I'll have to investigate.=)
btw the floor material over here uses bump offset which appeared to be a pretty nice thingy!)
And I'd really love to thank my girlfriend for not killing me already,'cause I've been working like a maniac lately. She's the best.)
All the houses share one texture. And the main big building has two. For the Dome and for the emm....emmm....ehemm.....the bottom part.)
so good luck, everybody!=)
and c&c are as always welcome.
cheers
If you need some help with lighting here are two things:
http://waylon-art.com/LearningUnreal/UE3-09-Lighting.htm
^^^THIS!
A really good crash course in how to light in UE3.
Also, in terms of lighting techniques, I always recommand (like everything else), take from real life! Find places and spots that look exciting with lights! I don't know what time of day you are setting your piece in, but whenever I'm looking to do lighting, one of the first places I look at is Disneyland at night! Theres a lot of great colors you can paint in using lights!
Yeah I've seen the tutorial on waylon-art but haven't given it a poper reading yet, But now I will.)And Disneyland is sweet! even if I could not implement none of the lighting ideas I see there it'd be fun to watch anyway.) thanks again)
I think i can hear some bells jingle 'cause this one week extension has been truly a present! Hoooray! I've been jumping all around the room when I got the news=)Anyway, now I'm a bit more relaxed. But still working hard.
Since the last time a shitton of things have been done. I'm wrapping up the big stuff. The only big thing left is to texture the hand shaped monument at the center of the square. It's been pretty much textured actually, but I'm going to redo the uv's and try to get a higher texel resolution and focus my second beauty shot on it. At least I hope to.) Plus since we have a time bonus I wanna do some more small props to fill the streets with. Some of them will deliver the story.)Buuuuuut I think I'll speak about the story the next time.
Yay!I finally painted my skydome. It's been interesting how I wanted to add some stars later on, but even at the 1024x4096 resolution it turned out badly. All the one pixel stars looked like real fat little moons floating around=)))) So I've made a tileable stars texture and a mask for the clouds. Both greyscale. Then I just placed them in unused Stairs and The Big Building Bottom Specular chanels, since those were one of the biggest textures. So I set up my material using them, and made my skydome look sharper and more interesting absolutely for free memory wise.
I'm also thinking aboot adding some more variety to the houses. I've got some balconys and stuff modeled and unwrapped actually, I Just didn't paint a texture yet, so I'll be thinking about it and maybe come back to it later.
Oh and yeah. UDK is flippin' sweet.rly. Me liek it. I feel like I owe everyone at epic at least a handshake and some words of respect."Thank You, Guys". I mean it.
The stairs look a bit noisy from a far shot but there are just too small and far so there's probably nothing I can do about it. They are actually a bit big when you wonder aroun in a first person mode.=P
I'm still going to tweak light a bit and make this triangular thingy on the big building properly lighted. And the Hand monument. I'm even thinking about arousing a pillar of light around it.)
Btw, does anyone how to cure this seam I keep getting at car glasses? The uv's are mirroerd. but the model has one smoothing group there. I'm a bit confused and will have to investigate. I also have my mip map seams all over too. But I'll get to 'em. Oh just wait till I get to them.)
Sooo, I'm running out of things to write, but I guess there this one last thing that I'd really like to say:
Guys, I would really really really appreciate some feedback. Any comments or any critique, at all, are most velcome.'Cause I really feel that later on there'll be no time to improve or correct anything. But anyway thats up to you, so if you're just giving it a quick glance thats fine. I just hope you like.)
Good luck everyone in this final week! I sure you guys will pull it off greatly!=)
Good night and till next time.=)
I think the scene is great so far, but you can really improve on the lighting. There should be more contrast in the light itself, right now it looks like there is a big ambient light overtaking everything. Make the lamp posts cast a stronger light with a high falloff (compensate with a larger radius as well).
Also, those sweet cars are there, make one or two of them have the headlights on and and light up the area around the arm/ stairs.
Finally, use some blue or yellow spot lights on the big building in the background, like some "art" architectural lighting they often do in Europe (just google "parliament building night" or something like that, and you'll see what I mean). Do the same with the monument for sure, I think.
As for the scene itself, maybe break up the symmetry of the cars in the back a little. Also, the cars are high detail enough, so no doubt you could show more of them in the foreground: make the camera see through the side windows of one of those (for the first shot).
PS: seam in the windshield could be: 1 normal maps are hard to me mirrored or 2 the uvs end right where the painted texture area does (ie the edge of the uvs is right over a contrast edge on the texture), which occurs due to texture mipping. If it's 2 just use padding around the painted areas on the tex. Could be something else as well, then I've no idea
and some times some wicked stuff like this pops out. Looks pwetty though, but unfortunately unusable.
http://img211.imageshack.us/img211/1295/lighth.jpg
Don't forget that there's always fullsize.
I've been thinking about making a shot through the car glass....but as I much as i want to do this I also want a shot giving a clear view of the whole scene, which has to be a bit higher from the ground. And I also wanted to do a monument closeup with a memorial plate with some text on it. I feell like writing something there is important for me...so I'll just have to see how things will turn out and which oone' I'll choose. Nevertheless Thanks for the idea!
Meanwhile I worked a bit on some story telling props.
You know you can't have an environment without a fine woman posing on a billboard.) It;s been fun making a little photoshoot here.=) And yeah, the roof wasn't supposed to be seen, so pardon the mess...
And here's the news paper vending mashine that should tell you some more of the story. And advertise some rubber duckys for you.)
And also some wanted signs that are goign to be on the walss and flying around the place(you guessed it they were just piled on top of the picture in photoshop.))...
stay tuned for more about the story later on.=)
and ,Catachirsm, rly, thanks alot .)
So pretty pretty pretty please, some comment and critique! I know you have somethinng to say! Spit it out, fellas!=0
That's something close to my first shot as I see it. Some small tweaks are stll to come, but I've got to settle with something and decide with the second one. If you guys have any ideas about how to put up a secnod beauty shot I'd appreciate it alot.
And yeah I remember I promised more aboot the story, but that is yet to come. I've got to get my pics ready first of all.
Good luck to everyone and don't you rest until you're all finished!
/*bursurk mode on*/
I like your foreground buildings and street lamps though, finals just need some love.
Keep it up, almost done!
omfg. what a sweet word!=)finishedfinishedfinished.
there was a point somewhere at the start, when thought about not finishing, due to some opportunities that pressented themselves. But given it a thought I decided that I gotta finish it no matter what. No mattter the result. Finished work is gazzilion times better than any unfinshed, nevermind how great it is. Because until you build up in yourself qualities that allow you to carry out something from scratch and until the very end, until you can judge your abilities wright, and overstamate yourself a bit so you could let youself grow, you'd be a poor excuse for an artist. It's all about setting greater goals and making sure you've achieved them. And want to practice it as often as I can.
So now I feel like all those sleeples nights payed off.) I feel great, I feel amazing.
The funny thing is, Em. told me that finals just need a bit more love. A bit more love. I got a tonn of it now!=) I dunno why, but I just feel like I'm about ready to burst with it.) Yeah some things I thought about I couldn't realise. Like I wanted to cocentrate the second shot on the monument, But this whole square was to much space and felt really empty, and I didn't haven enough resources to cover things up once I came to realise it. Thats was a shame. Plus the monument textures once compressed by UDK didn't hold a closeup particuraly well.
so my second thought didn't turn out quite how I wanted it to be, but you know what? Fuck it. I love it anyway! Every single pixel of every single picture you see here, every single second I spent doing It, every sleepless night, and every time eating once a day not to waste time. IT FOCKING WAS AWESOME. And if there's anything on all those pictures, then its love.=)
tender love and care.)
Plus, I've got a tonn of knowledge. Even more, but I feel like I've been using curse words to much already, so lets just say 5 tons!=) The expireince was totally invaluable, and I'd love to thank everybody who helped this challenge become reality! You guys rock=) This wasa real challenge and a real pleasure.
For the second shot I acutally had to do paint rooflights reflctions into a texture map, to accenuate and broaden them a bit more.
Chechout the sculpt of the hand.) Aaaaand I really wanted you to check out the base of the monument. That was a very interesting piece to do. I decided that I want to make it look like there were thouthands of smaller hand pushing from the inside, it's like there are all this people down below who are trying to reach too, coming through all this hardships and difficulties. But they are still pushing. So to do it I actually put my hand into the scaner and made a stensil out of it.) And then sculpted it all out. So every palm you see there is pretty much mine.%)
And you can read what is written on the memorial plate at the monument bottom.(i rlyrlyrly hope somebody does.)
Then concept sheet was fun. I scanned all the little tiny pic I draw while thinking to make it more visual.) So pardon me being a lousy drawer, but I'm working on it.=)
And yeah, I remember I promised some on the story.
I see the potential in this story but I didn't want to go too deep with it for now. Maybe someday I'll comeback and finish it up, and make it into something. The story is about a man being made an enemy of the society, but I'd really give some more unusual focus points, so thats why included the little dialog between Dan and Virgil. I am sorry that it's in such a rough state but I really flt like posting it tonight and getting some rest from all the stuff related to the challenge so here goes:
The story revolves around a guy named Danny Taurus. He's an Astrolife pharmacologist. He works his dream job and is completly dedicated to it. He has his own reasons. Some background facts led him to be so preoccupied tih his job.
The last project he worked on was a new Astrolife medicine called "Project Salvation" that was supposed to comletely block hormone emission, to help anyone whos body or brain aren't able to wistand it. The project was a success. But after little while it was noticed that many healthy pepole started using it too. As a sort of an antidpressant, but that blocks any other unpleasant you might have. So techincally even if people understood that they should feel angry and upset, the didn't feel a thing at all. That allowed more people to ignore their destructive pains of and everyday life. In a bling of an eye it has become so popular that at some companies it was given to emploees for free, for it lessened the number of confilcts and disagreements' in he company. Astrolife has been earning tons of money and in a matter of years became the biggest international pharmcutical corporation.
Daniel wasn't fascinated with hype around the mdeicine he helped creeate. He htought it was being misused and became more of a fashion trend than a help for the needing. Some just thought it was cool to be coldblooded all the time, and the other just were happy they didn't smack their boss in the face and didn't loose their job.
One night, Danny stayed late at the lab again. Being to didecated to his job he had no family to hurry to. He needed to check out some data about what the other Group did, while working on the salvation project. Using some other computer, 'cause he's been dstroyed in a preceeding accenedent, he found out, that the Salvation Pills actually contained some highly addictive ingrideints. Next morning he aksed an explanation from Virgil, his boss about this and it turned out that he knew, and at first this ingrient was used just 'cause it was much cheaper, and was supposed to be replace after they run out of a huge stock of it, that company had. But then seeing, how people got hoocked on Salvation they deicded to keep it. Daniel threatened them with exposing the truth for he didn't work this hard with so much love and care just to make new drug. He's boss, being his friend tried, to reason him and tell him that the corporation will go down and lots of good people will loose their jobs and some even will go to jail.
But he didn't listen. It was reported about all the way up to CEO and the guys quickly turned the table around making a statement that thye've just discovered that the Salvation medicine contained some highly addictive ingridients and that their emploee being a drug adict for many years carried out this "sabotage" while working as the head of Salvation team 3.
Daniel was accused of things he didn't do. He was wanted by the police so he could not go home or to his sister. Later that night he decied to break into the laboratory and steal the data to prove his innsence. Unexpectidly noone changed the password so he could g in just like that. Inside he met his foromer colleague Riche whom he told the truth, and Ricchie believed him. But suddenly the corporate security busted in and stared shooting. Daniel managed to get away, without any data, but Richie was killed. Astrolifes "legend" was that daniel broke into the lab and started shooting.
Hiding out for a couple of days, sleeping on the streets, Dan finaly decided to apy Virgil a visit Asking him to get the files from Astrolifes lab and disclose them. But virgil hesitated and said that he warned him, and that doesn't want to end up in the same situation as Dan did. Daniel called him a coward and they had a little fight:
***
- It's not about the addictive ingridients, don't you get it yet? All this people had a choice wheter to try it or not. Wheter to get addicted or not. And given a choice most would've just kept using the Salvation anyway. All this people, they would rahter just trade away their worries and cares in exchange for being numb and idle.
- But with their anger and fears and stress they waste everything good about their lifes that they could feel. We can't just deprive of their chance for joy. You think you can just sit there and paint somebodys world grey becuase you think yout whats better for them?
- It's their choice. Even if the pills are a bit more addictive then they could be, they are much more addictive psycologiacally. You can get off it if you want it so much. But look at them! Just look at them! How many people do? You see, there are just so many men and women that hate their shitty lives so much, that they piss and moan everyday like impotent jerks stating that there's nothing they can change. That lifes not fair. Dreaming to win a lottery! What for? So that they should have themselves a shit ton of money? So they could leave in a villa with an ocean view and drive an expensive car to pick up chicks? They blame everything and everyone but themselves for the state they are in. And no matter how hard they try nothing changes. But you know what. In 95 cases out of a hundred, when a human being says he can't do something, being serious, it means that the amount of work he has to put into it doesn't exactly corelate with an amount of work this person is willing to invest. If you are didecated and purposefull enough there are much less impossbile things in life you know. And some people could even be an example of it. You could be! But it's not the lack of motivation I am really worried about. It's the goals people lack motivation to achieve. You know, sometimes I think the society just feeds you with all this shitty lame and useless values it has. Trying to make you dream those useless dreams. Now 'cmon this society dreams for them! And they don't even know about it. They think they are so unique wanting to be pop singers or movie actors or dj's or models or businessman or whatever is now "in". Or just be fucking filthy rich. Tell me, If every one is so different and unique why the hell do most of them have those same fatigue goals in life?! Why their values and desires are so fucking identical. How is such a phenomenon as popar culture even possible cosidering the diversity of humanity? Every person is shaped under gazzilions of unfamilliar circumstances and still most of them want same things? Do you really think that all that popular things would be popular if the society would not approve? If every single person would be able to judge every "new thing" independantly without knowing about other peoples opinioins those things would be that popular? It's in humans nature to do as other people for that way you can avoid taking resposibility for your actions or being judged. 'Cause you can always excuse yourself with the other man doing so. Every body lies you lie. People cheat on their wives, why should you be any better? Everybody wants to be rich and famous, why should you be any different? People are more concerned about being cool and having an image of themselves that they work so hard on, than on actually enjoying their lives. Do you really think those are the dreams worth saving? Or maybe those are the feelings worth dying for? I think that dreaming for yourslef is so hard that people just let it go and adopt as much goals as they can from the others so their life wouldn't be so empty. Wouldn't feel so useless. There are people out there who don't need no Salvation. And those people are unaffected at all. You know what this pill is? It a litmus paper. It lets you see the difference between people who live their lifes and lifes that live their people. Is that really so bad? Ease the pain of those, who are uncapable of making something more out of themselves. Doens't ti seem to you just like another twisted step of evolution? If they want it, whu won't you let 'em have it?

On his way from Virgils Dan was seeng by a patroling poilce car, the cops recognised him and started a chase. Dan was running for it. He felt like he was being chased down and that he'd probably wouldn't get to far, so he looked at his options and decided to head for the place where he would attract as much attention to miself as possible. But he was already expected there. Danny would make it just to the monument where he would draw his last breath reach with his hands to the words written with gold, that enouraged him to be true to himself and brought him to such a situation.
(you might want to return tot he construction sheett here and reat what letter did Dans hand rest, while he was reaching for his last breath).
I hope it's not to dark. You whats the great thing I find about such ending? That its a game. And you can play, go through it, feel it and die. And turn it off, and transfrom all the experince you had into some decisions about yourlife.
At the beginig of the challenge my original idea was that the game ends where real life starts. But I realised that it'd be to hard for me to cummincate just yet, for at that time I haven't even ever done a simple next gen asset. But I really feel that games have so much more narrative potential, and that they have so miuch personal stories to tell and allow you to experience perosnal drama in millions of unusual ways. It's just blows me away. A chance to tell people stories with oportunities to make them responsible for whats happening there. ...
srry, I'm too sleepy. Maybe I'll wish to correct this in the morning but know I'm constantly fading out,=)
sooo....goood night everyone! It's a been a real honor and a pleasure and a thrill! You are great. Every single one of you.) Keep up the good art flowing. And don't you ever forget how much you love it.) And all the other things in life.%)
cheers. zzzZZZzzzZZZzzzzz
oh, and yeah, Em.thank you so much for your comment! I tried to keep it mind but was afraid too afraid to miss the deadline so I didn't have enough time to properly experiment. Anyway thaks a lot and your words about love have been priceless.)
p.s. It's funny how my finishing post is 13 in this thread 'cause 13 is my moooost favourite number. sweet.)
I actually was most worried aobut my second shot, so your words are like music to my ears! Thanks you so much , buddy, you can't even imagine how much wider you made me smile the very second I read your post.) me iz happy%) !!!
I also like the 2nd beauty, I was hoping you'd do something like that; the interior holds up the level of detail quite nicely as well.
PS I just realized what you meant by using your hand as a stencil... that's a great touch on the monument. Actually the whole monument is really well though out, period.
I actually think that a sense of discovery is somewhat crucial to a truly good environment. It's one of those levels that videogames can deliver emotions on. Once you feel that you've seen or paid attention to something, you really think of narrative in a more interactive way. It's not that you are simply shown the things you need to see, but it's more of your personal achievement that allows you to feel more fulfilled and thats what videogames are all about. Remeber how portal had those cool little places where other guys used to hide. With all it's writings on the walls it gave me chills everytime. I read every single word written there, even
though you could just complete the game without even bothering.)
