With the new Polycount's release creeping up we're looking to get an entire new
bunch of header images in the rotation.
Much like you see here, the new website has a whole new functionality in how the
banners will work.
- Possibility to be seen on every single page within Polycount. Not JUST the community
pages. Everywhere!
- The authors name is 'clickable', bringing you to their Polycount profile page.
With that, I'd like to ask for you guys to recommend some stellar art work
you've seen around the community as of late. It can be 3D, 2D, low poly, high
poly, realistic, artistic, you name it.
A few requirements, though!
It needs to fit well within a 1024px
width. If it doesn't, I may have to get in
there and edit the image which no one should really want
Don't be shy! We have some amazing talent here, and you're likely
contributing to that. So show us your work and we'll do our best to get it in
rotation. If you don't think you're going to cut it or simply don't want your
work to be showcased (what!?) - recommend someone else's work!
Post images here and we'll contact the author for permission.
Thank you!!!

If only other game art forums did this. /sarcasm
So yeah, cool stuff, as it's pimped...good idea.
I guess you can make a contest once a month as well for the banner of the month, it might motivate people.
i don't even get if you agree with me or not...

I say this as there is so many great artists that have been posting here for years that it is hard to pick favourites nevermind favourite pieces.. Artists like Pior, Bobo, Shotgun, Vahl, Peppi, Spacemonkey, Shimmer, Ruz, Poop, Rooster, Mop, Neox etc. etc. etc. are what I think of when I think Polycount - it would be great to see some of their work on the banner.
Aactually what am I talking about...other people? Pffft - ego all the way - put some of my stuff up goddammit!

Hope you dont mind the pimp Ani
I think this: http://www.laurenscorijn.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/Cougarrear01.jpg
or this: http://www.laurenscorijn.com/website/projects/idenemyrobot/afb/viewportgrab1.jpg
could make for a nice banner image.
Otherwise, I quite liked these tidbits by other people:

But yeah, I know you guys are more into character and environments here, so this is just my preference.
What about animated banners? Just a few frames so animators can get some lovin too.
I TOTALLY agree with pior on this one. Voting systems suck, and the lack of such a system is one reason why I love PC. People know good art when they see it and true community users here will support those that really deserve it.
edit: yeah i agree with 3DLee also, that stuff from teaandcigarettes thread is nice work i believe i even mentioned it should be banner material in that thread....
and let us not forget some killer stuff from b1ll and updated work from kevin johnstone
I think there are enough admins with varied tastes around to just let them chose what they think is worthy (which shouldn't stop people from giving suggestions of course). Forums shouldn't be a democracy.
I was gonna recommend Ani, but Frubes beat me to it. She rocks and having one of her pieces in the banner would make a nice contrast to some of the more realistic pieces already there.
I'm not a fan of thread ranking aka CGTalk. It seems to lead to pages of mindless praise and people who need help being ignored.
It shouldn't be based off of views, as some pretty bad art gets a lot of attention, normally because of tude and not merit.
Yeah, threadgalleries are nice for sketchbooks and long WIP threads, like the Unearthly ones, to show progression.
yea, I hate thumbs, but as long as I can turn it off....
u can find some of my works in these places:

Sorry, I must have been tired. I was agreeing with you.
My point was, it would be great just to have a small gallery of recently pimped awesome work that is updated...like so many other art communities (all of them?) do already.
It would encourage folks to pimp more, to be seen. I likely miss out on lots of great work here because of lack of time, or poorly worded thread titles. A rotating gallery would help find what's hot. Selected or voted banners are more favorable to cliques within the community.
- No voting, sorry. Art or our members will not be voted or ranked, and we're certainly not going to start. You guys can measure your dicks and compare results elsewhere I am sure
- I made this thread to get a head start on our current system, which is us choosing fantastic artwork. I am busy doing other website stuff and wanted some help. I should have explained that earlier
- As for Thread thumbnails, we're going to try and do that one better: No thumbnails.
- LOL, awesome, you're confused. Essentially imagine our current forum as it looks now, only all threads within P&P have this magic ability that when they're Thread Title is hovered with your mouse, the first image that post contains is displayed, floated about the page. Sort of like text pop-ups, only its an image popup. The new polycount will be so simplistic in nature, that all of its sexiness will come from you guys. Thumbnails are unneeded clutter.
Thanks for the suggestions so far everyone - keep them coming! Not to mention it's too much like all the other sites out there.

Plus, I agree with not having thumbnails - having them might deter people from viewing things full-size in the thread.
Whereas on many forums with star rating systems, fancy galleries & thumbnails you have couple of 90-star threads with hundreds of "u r0x0rz" style comments made by strangers. Nobody bothers to check stuff that is below awesome, i.e. in dire need of proper critique.

yeah, this is pretty awesome, and I was happy to see the banners we have now go up. It's going to be really interesting when we have a lot more people represented around the website. Can't wait!
This is something we always try to keep in mind, and one of the biggest reason why we are apposed to the whole rating/thumbnail type systems. It discourages people from checking the thread on a mere quick glance. Which is more harmful to the overall user experience on PC IMO.
QFT, which is why i'm glad the threads don't have view counts either as a lot of people will only check out high view count threads for mere glance. I've always only posted to provide/receive C&C and robbing any of that would pull PC away from our already unique community.
crazyfingers: lol
stars for threads are no good for polycount
