In the vast reaches of space the final stage of a war game is taking place.
Two armadas of giant iconic warships tear each other apart on a grid of battle platforms that hang in the void between stars.
It's checkmate in this Sci-fi Chess Battleship Mash-up Space Opera 3000!
:poly127:END GAME!!!!!:poly127:
:poly136:
The following rough sketch took about 2 minutes, but gets some of the main elements incorporated.
">
The ships will retain the main shape of chess pieces, with added on goodies like antennae, jets, boosters, noopers, purners, engines, windows, Big guns, little guns, and lots of cool stuff.
Kinda like if Captain Kirk and Han Solo joined forces to defeat the Evil Vader Borg Empire.:poly124:
Been doing tons of sketching on paper to come up with ideas to move forward on. Here are a few for the platforms that will make up the floating white squares on our chess board in space.
">
Here are some of my ideas for the chess piece battle ships.
">
">
Pre-Vis! To block out the shot I threw some placeholder models together and spaced them out in various ways, this is the first stab at how the board will be set up and the staging of the scene.">
Ok, we've got some placeholder-ish Chess lowpolys ships comped into the scene in Unreal and some rough lighting to figure out some "SpaAatial Relationships" Me Scotty and Zhen decided we needed some some feedback. Everyones stuff looks really interesting, I can't wait to see more Unearthly goodness. Especially from my AILA homies... ">"> "> ">
">
We've decided on our pawn. The model is on it's way!
Thanks for the feedback fellas. Will try to incorporate some more foreground elements without making it look like we just stuck some random stuff in the scene.
In the meantime we've got lots of progress that I'm excited about. Scotty has been kicking out the jams on the space platforms that will make up our "chess board".
I threw together this color pass by painting on top of his model in Photoshop.
I'd love a little forum feedback if anyone out there has the time. We are about to have a Sticky Rice team meeting and we've got to wrap this puppy up soon.
We made the switch to the UDK. What do you guys think of the design so far? I'm liking it. It does take a little getting used to though.
I like the floating platforms, the space background is pretty cool, and the chess pieces could be neato even though that seems to be a 1-in-10 entry theme this year. But, it all seems so minimal to me especially considering this is a three man team. Honestly, what is this 4-5 assets and a background? Either need more unique stuff or remove most of the platforms and recompose the scene without as much repetition.
With the scale of things, the whole scene reads as a background. Nothing is being sold as that foreground detail with a scale we can relate the size of everything too. The space background itself is pretty distracting from the work too.
Thanks for the honesty. We probably won't be able to do a huge makeover, but we will try to incorporate the feedback where we can. I agree, space background needs to be less prominent. The repetition also needs to be addressed.
It's a cool idea and I like some of your early block outs and lighting.
I think you've gotten away from that. Like Cholden pointed out, I too think the background is way too noisy and is cluttering up the scene making it hard to distinguish the pieces, their silhouettes are being lost.
Less stars, less rainbow colors and more of a unified color. Don't forget the polycount logo and the team colors black and green. You've got black by default if you clear out some of the cosmic clouds, green could be easy enough to work in if you just drop the logo in some place.
We are almost there. I've just got to wrap up some effects and make the final touches. Scotty and Zhen have worked their asses off this weekend and the results are all over the place.
Thanks to those that offered advice, we have tried to incorporate your suggestions and feedback. Cholden and Vig are very cool for telling us their ideas.
It's such an awesome feeling to see my concepts come to life. Scotty kicked lots of ass on in this project. He modeled and textured tons of stuff. I give you the Black King. Zhen modeled the black pawn and did a great job, he also is the reason the background looks so much better. Zhen knows his way around the material editor.
Out super mega chess spaceships would be nothing without some kick-ass guns. We decided to model those separately so we could stick them on wherever we wanted and aim them in different directions. Zhen and Scotty teamed up on these.
I had to model something! We decided we needed a planet around to help with a sense of scale. So I made this polycount moon.
Unfortunately in all battles there is a loser. This is the White King that Scotty spent a few hours smashing. There are going to be some more broken bits being blasted into space.
And here is the latest version of the beauty shots. We are only missing a few things. I'd love some more feedback if anyone has the time.
The metal on some of the pieces looks wonderful! But like I said earlier, emissives! I wonder if you can feather the edges on them a bit! They fight with the rest of the scene!
I just submitted the final images to gameartisans! Crazy. What a fun project.
Here are the final images.
Beauty shot 1!!!!!
Beauty shot 2!!!!
"Construction sheet" not 100% sure if this is what they wanted but this is what they got!
The Concept sheet!
And last but certainly not least, the Texture page. (with room to spare)
Sharing is caring. This has been awesome.
Thanks to ZacD, Cholden, and Vig for the feedback. :poly127:
Seforin, I hope you like it! :poly122:
Killahk and ProfessorXXX thanks for the encouragement. :poly136:
BlvdNights for the creepy-ass profile pick. :poly142:
Of course none of this would have happened if it weren't for Scotty Wang and Zhen Xiao. We have always wanted to be on a team together and we finally did it.

Still finishing up queen, but you get the idea?

....AND...
I've finished the concept for the queen
Still have lots to do....
The Super Mega King War Cruiser concept is basically finished. We might need some more details here and there.
Our guns have to be awesome, so I came up with some different kinds of sci-fi guns to stick on our Epic Battle Chess Space Opera warships.
How you like me now?
This is a Zbrush Render, that I painted over in Photoshop. Modeling by Zhen Xiao!
Here is Scotty Wang's beautiful model of my Queen Warship concept. (Her guns are getting modeled separately)
I threw together some space backgrounds to use for our starry background.
AND FINALLY...some hecka sweet wips of our final 2 shots! We borrowed some effects from Unreal, but we plan on replacing theirs with our own.

Not sure if this link will work, but it might be worth it to look at some of the entries from the Grand Space Opera challenge

But wow! What a great little scene you guys have!
Benno, thanks for the critique, we went a little excessive on the emissive.
Zhen is going to play with our textures to calm those down.
I got some "effects" in here now. Check'em yo.
