Hey guys,

Given that my skills aren't sufficient for me to enter the Unearthly Challenge this year, I thought I'd focus on improving my skills by entering the melee weapon workshop by modeling the Axtinguisher from TF2.

I'm wondering what the best way would be to model the barbed wire coils that wrap around the axe's head? I would have thought that sculpting them in ZBrush would've been prohibitive, if I wanted any clearance between the wire and the axe head (it'd look pretty stupid if the wire was wrapped so tightly around the head that there were no gaps whatsoever), but actually modeling them using splines is, unsurprisingly, resulting in a ridiculously high count.

I'm guessing that texture planes would be the best way to accomplish this, but I've not used this method before. Any suggestions, or links to suitable tutorials on how to go about achieving this?

As ever, thanks in advance.
