i am using 3ds max 2010.
if any of you have used photoshop, you know that when pressing SHIFT + mouse to draw a line or create a particular object, it will be precisely proportional. in other words, a line will be straight, an ellipse will be a circle and a rectangle will be a square..
is this possible in 3ds max? i mean, it should..
i really need this 'feature' to cut straight lines with the cut-tool.
thank you.

Look into the quickslice tool for cutting across more than one poly.
i am not talking about cutting from one point to another, (verticles) because that would be a straight cut. i mean, cutting any area of an object (i.e. a plane).. so yes, cutting lines which are aligned to an axis.
thanks for the answer
i think i might as well just cut a piece, and then align the verts with the move tool [although what you mention is way more effective]
thank you.
Use the cut tool with 3D snap to mid point turned on.
Select two edges and click connect.
If you're using graphite modeling tools there is a swift loop function that places edges by clicking, you'll probably like it.
