Rendering Tutorials/Suggestions

Hey guys,

I'm going to be honest here, I know pretty much nothing about rendering using Mental Ray or Vray, and I'd like some suggestions on some good tutorials/dvds ETC.

First off, is there a large difference with mental ray and Vray?

I use Maya/Max/XSI, so are there any DVD's you guys would recommend for rendering and also doing things like SSS for characters.

i second this thread, i could use some catching up on all the latest rendering techniques for characters,

imho, the largest difference is that mental ray comes with max. vray seems to be more commonly used for archviz which might be due to them having introduced proxies before mray. mental ray has a nice SSS material.

If you do game-art, you never really have to render with Vray or Mental Ray. There's Maya High Quality, Max Viewport shaders like mine, Marmoset, Unreal Tournament 3, Crysis, etc...
All way more applicable and correct to use than any rendering engine.

My experience with recruiters is that they can't tell whether it's realtime- or pre-rendered and simply judge your images by what "looks good" in their opinion. The better the image is, the higher chance of getting to an interview.
This is ofcourse not always the case but I'd rather send a pre-rendered and get their attention and later(if asked) send a realtime render.
