My idea so far is a modernized Link character from Zelda, but I'm really going to try to keep a Fable-like style. I need to push the porportions more, and work on the pose. He's gonna get a rifle, but I still need to bring more modern elements in.

i'd say get some nice silhouette poses first and then start working on the details. Im sure you could push the Link vibe in there once you find a nice base to work from

Seriously though, don't be afraid to get in there and hammer away at details, you can fix proportions, pose, and start fresh as is needed.

It's a tall challenge to modernize link without taking away all the identifiable elements. Maybe start by gathering together photo references for a modern outfit: shirt(s), shoes, pants, belt, hat, weapon, that you'd imagine link having today.

To inform your decisions, think about his circumstances. Is he a high school student? Then maybe he has a...

-baseball bat --If he plays sports, maybe that's where you can develop his armour from?

If you do that and then further embellish the elements that distinguish him as link, it'll be far more convincing.

actually I want the character a bit less link like than he is now, I'm not going for instant recognition.

I plan on trying to do everything, but I'm not the best concept artist.

why not do some concept silhouette thumbs and then you will have interesting shapes instead of generic human male shape you have at the moment?
