Going solo again.
I'm just gonna do something simple, unlike a lot of the craziness that everyone else seems to be doing with explosions and aliens and 2012-esque themes.
My idea was to do a pirate theme. Lots of pirate ship debris and obvious residue from pirate battles in the open sea.. and one last standing slightly battle torn ship docked at an island (reminiscent to the island Elizabeth Swan and Jack Sparrow were left at in the first Pirates of the Carribbean.) With a big cave maybe. And maybe a trail of treasures from the cave to the ship to imply that there's pirate's booty in there.
I'm not much of a concept artist, so instead of embarrassing myself this early on in the game, here are some reference images:
Too corny? Needs more epicness?.. need some opinions. I kinda wanna stick with keeping it kinda simple.
I dunno.. maybe I'll just scrap this idea and think of something else.
Thanks.

crazyfingers - I think my epic "thing" shooting out of the water is gonna be just a big pirate ship graveyard that has black smoke and such that will show that there was a big battle.. I think it would get too much like everyone else's entries if I throw in some ancient ruins somewhere.
Jackablade - I was actually intending my pirate ship graveyard at sea be the 'end game' representation, seeing how there is only one last surviving pirate ship that has reached the destination (the island), whereas everyone else was obliterated at sea.
I haven't really worked on my scene yet.. Hopefully I'll have something by the end of the weekend to show. Having horrible drawing skills and not having a concept artist to work with will be pretty tough.. haha
Tell me about hehe.
Well I will do

Good luck for your project and for the contest.
C-ya:)
hey Nick! it's been a while. Yeah, I decided to join again this year. I heard that you actually showed my entry from last year to your students, without even knowing it was me. :P
I noticed you join the competition too. Looks awesome so far. I already bookmarked everyone from AI's Unearthly threads so I can keep track. haha
I still dunno what I'm gonna title this thing... I was thinking Booty Island..........
going solo huh, your good so i know you can do it, you should have made paul do this with you haha
Can't wait to see the updates of your progress! Keep it coming!
So... progress has been painfully slow. I don't have much to show..
I'm not working from any concept so I'm working blindly and I'm pretty behind.. sigh
Anyway, I was just playing around with some rock modules I made to see how they would work out. Everything I have right now will probably be changed... But I should probably post something anyway...
I was playing with 2 different skies. I dunno which one I"ll go with.
You don't need lots and lots of stuff for a solid entry, just think of a thing or two to kick it up a notch. Well done seaweed might be cool and not something i've personally seen done well in 3d.
Also i wouldn't worry about sky's right now, wait till your scene's more complete and find a sky that fits it after the fact.
Toli - I agree, I need to fix up that horizon. Dunno what I'll do yet.
the sand looks nice and the water is coming along.
The rocks are coming along, and with some texture mapping tweaks/less noisy texture... this will look good.
get some larger waves going on in the ocean and add a particle effect for water splashing on the rocks?
dig the treasure idea... make it happen.
Good job so far.
Hope you get everything done in time. Everything I'd mention has been pointed out already.
