Going to take a minute to write up our idea just to get it out there. We're in the process of thumbnailing some comps and designs right now.
ENDGAME -
We're taking the idea "checkmate" from chess and working it into a scene here. The idea we're tossing around is a story of warring corporations fighting for world power. The scene will be a cityscape consisting of one massive fallen building (the failed corporation) lying broken and shattered in the shadow of an even more massive skyscraper (the victor). Along the skyline you will see other buildings, all bearing the logo of the victor... one thing will become apparent though. All of the buildings share silhouettes of chess pieces. When this game of chess is over, the queen stands victoriously in the ashes of the fallen king. Game over. This is the real end game.
A few of the motifs are still up in the air with the idea... but it will be largely focused around showing the end game conditions of the game of chess, but illustrated within a game-art universe.
Started sketching some thumbnail ideas for how to stylize the chess piece buildings. Starting with the knight's horselike silhouette. Probably the most unusually shaped piece.
thats really cool breakneck, although i would say that the first thing i look at is the building on the left. I think A) because it seems of a different style than the rest and because is seems so much more interesting than anything else in the scene (although the rest of the scene is cool). What is it anyway? It looks like more than just a building. Quite intriguing.
Looking good, but it doesnt shout Chess to me, which then poses the issue... If someone doesnt see its chess, it wouldn't fit the 'end-game' theme (to them). Not sure what i'm trying to say, personally i'd like to see the chess pieces as they are traditionally designed, but perhaps made of rock/stone, and of a huge scale, as if they we're played by the gods or something.. Just a thought.
Skulburn, I see waht you mean. The paintover there is just to explore some values and composition for the final shot. Still working out getting the silhouettes down, and I agree that the objects will have to REALLY capture the silhouettes correctly if the idea is going to be expressed properly.
I see where skullburns coming from, sometimes you get so wound up with the idea that you forget about the aesthetics. Not saying this scene doesn't have potential though! I'd love to see some factions emerge, two styles of buildings for each side (you don't have to make an entire chessboard, maybe just the final battle area of the "checkmate".
I'd like to see more offensive capablities on the buildings themselvse. Maybe make these battle buildings, arm 'em with stuff. Make the pawns melee with small little wheels and chainsaws. Put giant rocket packs up the queen and missles for range. You guys can really run with the playstyle of each peice for ideas. Lookin' forward to seeing more, this is a kick ass idea!
Hey Crazy , yeah we had tossed around whether or not we wanted the buildings themselves to be warring and be all crazy with missles, Ion cannons etc... but we decided we'd opt for the more subtle message... although probably will end up being much harder to convey. It needs to be really obvious that they are chess pieces though... otherwise I think the idea will fail.
We don't necessarily want to explicitly show the entire story of what happened to these structures,,,, just show that they are chess related - and let the viewer make up the story as to how the buildings that are still standing put the king into checkmate and crushed his empire.]
Still in the concepting process of figuring out how we'll make sure everything comes across. If we fail, at least we'll have cool looking stuff haha
Hey Swall, nice comp there, i dig the bridges. This is actually quite nice - although I'm no master of the subject of composition, that's more Breakneck's motif. I like where you went with this though, I want to see about later down the road increasing the scope of hw far away the queen looks though, with like, 20 blocks of building between us instead of about 4 like we see here.
In the meantime, I went ahead and did a little blocking out of the knight building... I'm gonna do some paintovers on this guy and determine if I want to round out the chest in front or add some more greeble. Let me know what ya think.
Nice rusty. I've gone back in and reworked my knight building a bit to match the roundness of you and Swall's designs... I'm gonna jump in to UV'ing later tonight or tomorrow to get a little momentum back into the project.
We need to talk a little bit more about how we'll do the tileable paneling.
I am really liking the form of the pieces you got so far. One crit that stands out to me is the buttresses on the knight just don’t make structural sense.
Buttresses are meant to support tall & unsupported walls from toppling over. The knight is tapered and not that tall compared to its footprint, it wouldn’t need the support especially so low at the base of the structure.
hmmm, maybe swap the supports onto the bishop? It was typically religious structures that used such supports anyway. Personally i could care less about structural purpose so long as it looks good, though. This is game art after all, 95% of gamers don't even know what a buttress is...
Yeha, i dont really like the buttresses on the knight either... they look all blocky and dumb lol - plus i think i put too many of them on there. I'll probably take 'em off tonight and see what other kind of cool shit i can put on there instead
Not to mention, probably wont even be able to see that part of the structure anyway after the city is placed around it
Right on fellas... I hink I'm gonna move forward with this general blockout and start throwing down some UV's while I finalize all the little extras, but this will be my first approach at it.

This should be fun!.. let's see what you cryptic guys got

Concepts will be posted tonight.
Yours looks better than what I though of doing, though.
I'll stick to my tetris blocks.
more to come!
i wish i had a scanner
Good stuff guys.
lolwut?

lol @ death star
I like where this is goin!
just saying so i've said something!
3 reads the most like a building while still maintaining the silhouette, but 5 just looks cool so its a hard choice...
Cool work tho.

edit: little update
Here's a little edit... I'm gonna try to push my curves on this one a bit more to match the style of yours a bit more. Nice!
each butchess is about 400ft looking at 27k ft over all

still trying to hash out a good composition, will try to post ideas this weekend
