Hey guys! guess I'm in this year, lets see if I can stand the pace. good luck everyone and look forward to seeing some awesome art from you all
[EDIT -
so we are now a team of three!

I've taken a little time today to knock up a couple of quick sketches. My ideas at the moment are to have the end game scene as an area mythicaly that is sought for, or found at the end of a journey. I'm thinking 'the tree of life', 'the fountain of youth' or Valhalla.
these sketches are for the Tree of Life. I am thinking about having the tree as the lone organic survivor in a baron wasteland (although the first sketch does not show this!) I ll see if I can knock up a sketch for valhalla next.
any suggestions would be more than welcome!

Show them the other concept L3xicon.
and as requested, very quick concept for Valhalla. hopefully something more rendered later.
I did a few color variations, the 2 best of which are below. The general consensus seems to be to go for the top one with the golden sunset or whatever. I still want to make a finished, polished concept though, time permitting. These are much too rough :P
early wip of the wrecked longboat
Played through Uncharted 2 recently, worth looking at as I think it's one of the best example of snow environments in games. You might not be quite going for this style of course but it may give a few ideas...

all in good fun
dont have the time nor the energy to enter the 2d one though. But theres always next year. Would be nice to spend some more time on just creating a nice painting. But for now, i hope i can squeeze some 3d in and update this thread soon.
Also planning on maybe trying a different composition for the scene, time permitting.
And the rest of you guys, show some of your stuff darnit! the ship is starting to look really nice.
So, after L3XICON decided to go with the Valhalla concept he made he got Labmonkey and me to join as his worthless slaves.
L3x made the preliminary blockout:
We all agreed that it was kinda awesome. After deciding which colour palette we would go (thanks labmonkey for the color ideas) Labmonkey started to make a paintover:
After the paintover was done, L3x and me started modeling the stuff. Taking the blockouts and the ideas from the concepts and making them 3D.
L3x started on the Longboat which you can see in an earlier post in this thread.
And I started on props:
Then L3x decided to rework the blockout a bit, including an update of his longboat:
And he started doing some tests for rocks:
I then continued making some more props:
And some tests for Ice and Snow materials:
L3x did some more tests on the rocks, including previous snow material:
(lame disclaimer time!
"It's work in progress bla bla" )
And Thats it so far really.
L3x will post an update of his longboat in a few minutes.
L3x and I will be doing more tests for the rocks, trying to give it more definition and detail, and to find a good way to unwrap and reuse them, etc.
And of course torches, some runes, decals, lovely fire stuff, the actual valhalla building (oops), and more world pieces.
Cheers
Here's an update on the boat from L3x:
A test to see if we're still on track.
We noticed that we need to add a few things and can leave other original ideas away.
Also, we're still struggling with the rocks and stone trying to get a good, detailed but not too noisy surface for it. We haven't really gotten the result we wanted yet though we are trying some different approaches at the moment.
Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
Robert your concept is pretty cool, but it's not a surprise Chris and James, same for you guys on the 3d side, especially the boat and snow/ice are coming along nice. I'll keep watching you guys and good luck.
query- How did you do the snow on top of the rocks? Is it hand modeled geometry, or some sort of unreal paint on technique? Looks sexy.
Cody: The smaller snow bits are in the texture, we're going to use an alpha to blend that with the proper snow material.
The bigger snow on top of the stones is modelled, we use vertex colors to mask out and blend between the snow and stone.
what you see here will be mixed a bit with the old rock styles and should get a nice effect
hopefully we will be able to get some in engine shots of this later today along with some other cool ideas. not much time left now so down to the crunch!
2 different compositions here, I would be very grateful as to which you guys prefer either the duplicate essentially of the concept, or the slightly off centre.

another quick test with the assets we have got so far, and seeing what we can make from them, and what we still need to make.
It's very sloppy at the moment.
And we have floating boxes and cylinders
und
und, i dont really know why, but i like this shot, even though we are looking at backface culled floating rock geometry
The hall will look a bit more like this, but then with more tweaks to the material and texture:
Ugh, lots of work to do still
Their entry is looking sufficiently cool though, so all is forgiven.
I do like how the light is bouncing on those rocks from the building, for some reason the building reminds me of Lord of The Rings
Watch it, you're almost crossing a line here...
:P
We're probably not gonna finish it!
Labmonkay and L3Xicon found new jobs so they'll be busy moving and getting stuff sorted out. And i got a lot to take care of as well, so yeah. Unfortunately
Here are the latest shots though. I did some more work on materials, especially the water. And Realtime reflection is working now as well.
It looks a lot better when in motion :')
