Setting:
Former earth-like now Desert planet with Central Asian culture. Third world. Would much more quickly adapt to the climate than invest in brand new solutions to try and fight it. However, they have developed some technology to moderate the increase of dust build-up. A local religion has developed around the large effigies that appear from time to time.
Background:
Intermittent dust storms and low rainfall have flooded the streets with layers of mud and dust that have grown increasingly higher over a good part of the past century. The locals have taken to jury rigging hovercrafts and blimps suspended to ropeways to get around, since the loose traction of the surface and the unpredictable moist/arid climate renders anything with wheels close to useless.
End Game:
The Red Giants have spent the past century preparing the planet for their inhabitation, dusting the surface to suit their biology. The local 'pests' have been slowing their progress, and they've come to exterminate.
So I decided I didn't want to place the scene in the slum area of the world. It's so much more end-gamey showing the capital getting torn apart, with the temple in the background, the main suspended bridge with the cars rushing to escape, and little houses in the background getting shredded by the cyclones. I'm also obscuring the giant vessels with the bridge to push their scale and also add a bit of mystery.
OK, going to refine the composition a bit more and flesh out some concepts, before moving on to the 3D block-in.
