thought this was another lay off thread. i'm glad it's not
You on crack? Or lack comprehension? Hope those affected land on their feet.
Age of Conan developer Funcom announced that it's laying off 20 per cent of its workforce today, with the result of a delay of "several months" in the development of its next MMO, The Secret World.
At least the rest of you that got to stay have a heads up to start looking for another job. Also they probably have enough money for about 3 months or less untill the end. Good luck all!
Really sorry to hear about that, I was hoping to possibly get a job there... Seems you're better off working at a grocery store if you're wanting to live in Scandinavia....
could've seen it coming...creeping up very slowly. Although the whole thing happened sooner than I would have expected.
And yeah, it the whole Montreal studio thing looks a bit fishy....or it's a last effort to save the thing and in that case you've got to wonder if there's any sort of long term plan going on.
Anyway, it's been an honour working with you guys...
I think most of the employees that were considered valuable already got their visa deals a while ahead of this announcement or they're gonna stay in Oslo for the time being. Then again, it may still be more economic to just hire new people, especially for grunt work - either in montreal or the beijing office - rather than transfer them.
I'll preface this by saying, it's hard for us to hire from outside the US, but by all means, PM me your names, emails and links to your portfolios, and I'll be more than happy to forward it on to recruiting!
I am sorry for all of you guys and your family that has been affected by this. We have a few artist positions but generally are very reserve about hiring outside of the US due to past issues.
I'm also wondering why nobody seems to be offering a nice relocation package to Montreal (of course you would have the right of refusal).
But I find it ridiculous that EA would close Chicago, Blackbox, EARS, only to open in Montreal. Eidos would shut down half it's operations, only to open shop in Montreal, and AGAIN with you guys at Funcom.
I beleive the Quebec Government's tax breaks DO extend to relocation packages.
So we have a few positions open, some here and some at other WB games studios. If you are either American or Canadian I can pass your info along. Sadly like most studios were not looking any further than that.
PM me if you want to know more and fit the qualification.
hey dawg, no I didn't... probably because I had already turned in my resignation, so they didnt bother. less paper work I suppose. will be leaving after november though.
There are positions at the 3 UK Rockstar studios (EU work laws should make this easier than moving to US). Most of the openings seem to be for coders, but there seem to be a couple of art ones.

i thought funcom recently expanded? first Grin and now this... hard times for the scandinavian game companies.
Hope everyone there ends up somewhere good.
"Yay"
"Oh, and 20% of you are now fired, fuck off"
Weak sauce.
Hope my friend isn't effected by this.

Is Norway expensive, and if so, why?
Sucks for those getting the boot. Find something better and kick your previous company in sales/survivability.
Norway is one of the most expensive countries in the world to live in.
Best of luck to those who got laid off, sure is tough times for the scandinavian game industry.
Good luck all.
Well thats expensive. Plus I think they need a certain quota of canadian citizens to work at the studio to get a tax break.
Anyway. Thanks guys.
You guys cheer up and go ahead find something better.I know you can.)
Do you know if Malicivs got hit aswell?
