Self shadowing normal maps. anyone using them?

Didnt find under quick search so general questioning here.
As title says....anyone using self shadowing normal maps? If so, got any quick tips and such on cleaning up the maps for bake? I spend a large amount of time cleaning maps b/c its so delicate. Looking to trim down that time.
