Well it sort of took forever to get it working but its working. Thanks to Gizmosan for the explosion FX. Going to be doing alot of this for our lil project. Cheers!
Hey Adam, we are looking at a baked RayFire (http://www.mirvadim.com) animation working inside the Unreal Engine. Almost worthless for gameplay but awesome for cinematics.
HL2 Ep2 stuff is baked up to a point then it's passed on to the physics engine.
No, the explosions and collapsing buildings are all baked animation. You can look at the animated models in the model viewer and see that they're all fully animated. A lot of death animations for characters, especially in L4D, are animation that transitions to physics after the animation is finished, though.
with baked animation I have complete control over the scene. With unreals fracturing (i think you mean kactors?) I cannot know that the giant piece of building will be in that exact spot at that exact time to blow up that helicopter or smash that APC.
Looks pretty rad, but my only critique would i feel like there could be a lot more smoke and blackness and whatnot. Because a majority of an explosion is the smoke and tar look. I don't know if thats what you are going for or not.

Like it should be quicker and more "Boom" rather than flow.
Still awesome.
I saw that and wondered if that was dynamic. Mystery solved!
I think they used Blastcode, a plug-in for Maya, to make all the explosion animations.
There's a few good tuts here for what valve did:

That explosion is meant for the helicopter, I can make one for the building.
