I can't put comparison photos on the site because of rights issues, but the eyebrows are very much mulled over. Thanks for finding the spelling mistake.
$49 seems about right - most custom portrait sites are from $200 and up. So it's cheap by competition or exchange rate (30 quid, 33 euro) but I understand a little out of reach for some. Any less and it wouldn't be worth my time.
also, just my word of advice, you've got a major competitor, i'm not sure if you got the idea from this guy, or thought it up on your own. But i think most people would like a cool, interesting, maybe a little weird portrait instead of a boring vector graphic (sorry about bluntness)
I personnaly prefer these vectors, its more refreshing, but the concern as a potential customer is: it would probably be confused with those auto-generator site (simpsons/south park one to name a few), and that something that would annoy me since I actually paid for it to be personal.
A lot of people in the comments there seem recognise it as a steep price too, wouldn't it be possible to automate it with some sort of written program or with a script? Similar to the Mii's but with better graphics. It perhaps would be more efficient to hand make a set of different noses ears etc etc and make a site that could put them together how the person likes.
Sorry to discuss and such, i just love odd-ball money makers as i spend a lot of time thinking of them because i can't find a job.

Haha yeah that was the first thing I was thinking of as well! Kind of like that southpark character maker. Slap some sort of watermark on it/sell the high-res version if they want it, or offer people to make a customised version for some extra bucks. Shouldnt be too hard to make program-wise.

I'm happy to see the gamers feed back and your own, whatever it might be. On regards to the price, I may have to think about it some more - but as facemakr is only a week old it's still early days, and may not be for everyone. When the Japanese site goes up the reaction will be different once again, as ¥5000 or so is peanuts here.
I'm sure as you know Rob, making an automated service is kind of what this is up against - it's hard to capture the nuances of an individuals face with these generators.
As time goes by I'll figure out what facemakr is meant to be, I'm sure things will change. For now, Kotaku have just done me a massive favor, I couldn't have asked for better.

Peter Molyneux
Gabe Newell
John Carmack.
Gabe Newell is the one that made me think of famous game dev, best one.
Peter molyneux is the least recognizable.
Spelling error on your website.
Great stuff though, Gabe's is awesome.
Cool site too, so you make them as the orders roll in and just adhere to a style guide. Or did you come up with a creation method?
"Co-Founder of id Software, famoud for his work on Doom and Quake."
Famoud? -d + s =
I recognized everybody unaided except Gabe Newell
And your Marilyn Monroe looks way more like Madonna. Too angular jaw, and the eyebrows aren't quite right, IMO.

Each one is hand done based on the individual characteristics, I don't currently re-use parts or have a speedy technique etc
haha, not really of course.
Carmack is the only one I have heard of, but I recognized him.
heres what he does http://www.heldstudios.com/gallery/v/facebook/?g2_enterAlbum=1
Do it in painter and you kick one out quicker
than vectors. It has very powerfull make it look like a handpainted portrait tools^^

Good work fella.
/cheer!
you would have thought they'd at least get more information, instead of just a quick link, then again, it is kotaku.
