Here in the states, the last number I saw was about 15-20% of all US house holds no longer have a fixed line telephone.
They get internet via fiber or cable and use cell phones for their phones instead of having a fixed line.
I dont mind the idea of paying 50p a month for a better communications network in britain though as long as they deliver
