This is from a drawing of a mace I had planned on modeling, and it shows to a certain degree. A lot of this design was better designed with a mace, such as the rather uncomfortably large pummel, and center "ballast" at the top of the core. While I started off modeling a mace (and it was a good edge looping exercise for me), it wasn't really feeling right, and I've been tweaking the model since then to get this.
Things I plan on changing:
Making the pummel a lot smaller and sleeker, more fitting for an axe.
Touching up the blade.
Maybe adjusting the core a bit...
Other than that, I like it, but I'd love all feedback (especially from an artistic point of view).

and kaburan, it's definitely a delicate balance. if i animate a lot of these things to appear more "floaty," that's definitely something to consider. i think you're right in that it'd get out of hand =P. i'm known to go overboard.
Here is my temporary "lazy man fix:"
it's now a mace! (rotated duplicate axe blades 45 degrees)
thanks bud. and i'm not gonna patent the handle =P. make whatever you were gonna make
