ok, well over at Conceptart.org they used to have a vent, its gone now but point being is people were usually on and you could ask for help and other things, people would be streaming live digital painting sessions and stuff. Would having a polycount ventrilo be a good idea? i know the one over at CA really helped me a lot and i thought that maybe polycount should have one. i just wanted to know what others thought of this idea...

and connect and be like DUDER IT CRASHED!
but then again you might get spammers yelling about god knows what
but i see how screen live streaming could be useful when you need specific help/crits on a project
push-to-talk is a wonderful thing.... just gotta yell at anyone that doesnt have it activated.

Yes, the server here has a Ventrilo server running. However, it's full, as it's limited to 8 users and is in use by a group of friends.
Next question, how do we get more then 8 users on it? Well, thats a great question and comes with a story. See, back in the young days of the interwebs, there was a game called Shadowbane that drakino used to play. Ventrilo was pretty new, along with TeamSpeak and others. drakino set up a Ventrilo server for his guild, and it worked well for the 30 or so people using it. Then one day, the makers of Ventrilo decided to combat these evil pirate Ventrilo servers taking money away, since those pirate users wern't paying some hosting company, and in turn, the hosting company wasn't paying Ventrilo. So they version locked their software, and limited the free version to 8 users. Now, I know what your saying, why was this bad? After all, Ventrilo people want to be paid for their hard work. And thats fine. My guild decided we'd be more then willing to pay for the software. I asked for prices, and got told to go screw myself. Err, I was pointed to their commandments for giving Ventrilo money, located here.
Basically, to be considered worthy of giving cash to Ventrilo, you must be a registered business, willing to buy 1000 slots minimum, and at some unknown to the public rate, grow your slots over time.
So, if Polycount wants a Ventrilo server, you will have to go pay some hosting company, because Vito is not cool enough to have the privilege of paying Ventrilo people money.
Ventrilo people are weird. They have been sponsoring Quakecon for a few years now, and allow the people on the LAN to host servers. But they do this only after forcing people to sign a legal document longer then the legal waiver for the event. Lets just say most people didn't bother with the hassle.
Anyone had any experience with Mumble as an alternative? I've seen icculus refer to it. Or VoiceChatter?
I doubt it... just get on the #IRC.
seems like teamspeak 3 servers are free?
