Well, I finally got my tablet back from Wacom (yah!), and seeing as I had spent the last week doing nothing but playing the amazing Batman:Arkum Asylum, I had Batman on the brain. So I decided to fire up zbrush and get in a practice sketch.
Here's what I did so far, just going to do the bust. Next up is adding the suit, and then off to make hair and normal maps for a game model.
Pretty slick looking joker chademond. I like how your mixing a few different joker styles together. I do have a few crits for the model. The back of the neck should be brought in more to match the slightly forward position of the head, it looks more like a space marine neck right now. The cheeks need more mass added to them below the eye and where the scars end. And too much of the upper ear is connecting with the head. Keep it up, I am curious to see what you do with his clothing.
@Nrek: Thanks for the crits, I'll make those changes. As far as the clothing, I'm not quite sure what I'm going to do yet. It's just a bust so I'll only be doing a portion of the toso, but there are alot of different routes I could go. Either the classic suit, or something like in TDK, or maybe even a mixture.
Since it is just a bust it might be cool to explore something like a nasty straight jacket that has the arms all tied and stuff but then the extra length of fabric on the sleeves kinda trails off into a cool like twisted mess that forms a base for the bust. Just a thought .
I'm really digging this, considering I checked out the arkum asylum demo today myself. I really like the look of it. The scaring in the cheeks looks great. The skin brush you used is working really well for the skin. The only thing I can see is that the eyebrows seem a little muddled and just need to be tightened up a bit.
ROXAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANE! it does look like Sting!
Nice attention to detail on the neck.
I think it'd be better if his eyes were a bit more open though with that sinister grin. But they can be fixed later!
Keep it up!
I like what you did with the hair, I need a good hair brush like that. One thing I thought after looking at this again is the furrow of the eyebrows, especially the pull down on the inside of the eyebrow ridge near the nose makes him less maniacal and more worrysome clint eastwoood.
Still this is just picking at small things for such a nice scuplt.
as far as inspiration for the hair goes, this might help:
About the best reference i could think of. Looks like it was all done in zbrush too, making it all the more doable.
P.S. really diggin' your joker, it's hard to tread the line of doing your own thing and staying true to the original, but you seem to be pulling it off.
Thanks Crazyfingers! AA has some great art, one of the reasons I've played it soo much haha.
I decided to finish this off as a high-res sculpt bust for my folio, so I'm im the process of polypainting. Now I've NEVER textured in zbrush before so it's a new experience for me, but I'm enjoying the results so far. I just worked on the face so far.
You need to fix that rear jaw area man. The huge concave you put in makes no anatomical sense, especially when making a huge grin, the meat just gets compressed in that area and it would bulge if anything, not cave in. Also there is a muscle going from the corner of the mouth that attaches to the jaw bone IIRC, so that's another reason that huge groove wouldnt be possible if he has a grin muscle.
Long story short, that huge pit needs to go, either flatten it out or make it bulge. Try it out and see.

Alright, thanks man I'll work on that part. Thanks for taking the time to help out!
Thanks for everyone at Polycount for the crits and help on this peice. Here are the final renders for my portfoilo. This was a fun sketch that turned into a polypainting/rendering test, but I'm ready to move onto other things. Cheers everyone.

Otherwise great piece all around.
Here's a test if the hair. I'm not sure how it looks sculpted, I may end up doing a combination of sculpt and alpha planes.
@Vig: Thanks Vig!
Here's an update

Anyone have any tips for the hair in a game model? I'm thinking alpha planes may be my only options, but I have heard they can be a pain in the ass.
