How may of you have seen it ?
Did you like it?
If you haven't seen it you must fix that mistake right now, but be warned if you want to take you GF or wife, especially if they're squeamish.
I enjoyed it a lot. The direction is amazing , and the whole movie oozes atmosphere and tension.
I did however find the violence a bit too much for what the director was trying to do.
Don't get me wrong i'ma big fan of violence , but i think the movie would have been just as good without being so specific.
Anyway it's a MUST SEE!

Edit: oh and is that why this is about since I see it mentioned a lot, the
violence or is there the emotional mind he likes to play in his other works?
Eitherway I'll see it since I'm such a fan, but I got more of a Tim Burton vibe from the trailer then a Von trier.
This one might be the most "hollywoodized" of his movies, in the sense that it had a pretty big budget, Willem Dafoe and some FX. But i can't imagine this movie any other way.
Dafoe give an AMAZING performance , as well as Charlotte Gainsbourg, the FX are pretty toned down. He mostly uses high speed cameras, and slows time down considerably.
Lets just say that the scenes in which he uses black and white , slow time, are at least GORGEOUS, i mean the movie is a visual FEAST. It is by far the most beautiful movie he's made.
Without spoiling it , lets just say you get a pretty good mindfuck as well as extreme visual violence. I usually say i cant take quite a lot of violence (i did watch Audition and other extreme JAP stuff, Ichi the killer, Tetsuo) but it made me cringe a coulple of times , and most of the girls at least turned their heads or closed their eyes.
It might be his most "hollywoodized" movie but i can hardly say it's been toned down. It has full frontal sex in the first minute of the film , i mean you get to see penis to vagina action before you reach the 60 second mark. So if that's toned down ...
All in all "hollywoodized" or not its a great movie. It WILL stick with you for a while.
I've always been a fan of the more over-the-top violent insane mind fuck crazy shit, not like hostel, etc.
Looks interesting.
Anyway thanks for the description, mime, set my mind at ease.
Well basically it's about coping with loss.
Minor spoiler alert!
The movie starts as I've already said , with a couple having sex and during which their only child , falls to his death. So the rest of the movie is coping with that loss, both for Him and Her.
He is a professional psychologist of some sort, so he is cold and calculated analyzing what his wife is going trough. They both take a trip to their cabin somewhere in the woods, where things go from bad to worse.
Thats about it , a very complex movie considering it only has two characters.
EDIT:
BTW it's not really a horror movie, it's more along the lines of psychological thriller.
It does however have a few scary parts.
Not his best, but really solid. It's always refreshing when when directors just don't give a shit about what they need to get done in a movie and they just do it.
I really enjoyed the surface story and I'm going to have to watch it a few times over to really understand what the message is and all the adam and eve parrellels going on here; it was pretty complex and the epilogue either ruined it or multiplied it.
It had a great mood from start to finish, a really good looking and sounding film and the story was surface story was pretty coherent for Von Trier; the violence wasn't over the top too much but really fit well in the context of the story but I didn't really get overly emotional during this one, which is kind of a first for his films, I was able to just sit back and enjoy... flintched on a few parts though... poor willem dafoe.
*Sorry for digging this up, but finally got to see it and had to get more people to check this out.
Visually it is a really beutiful movie!
Glad you enjoyed it.
BAM!
It was undoubtedly a messed up movie, but I wouldnt say that I liked it, or that I have a very high opinion of it.
The amount of gore/nudity was negible at most, dont see why people got so fussed up about it, seen much worse.
Loved it though, messing with your mind for sure.
