art shortcuts for game developers --?

As i keep doing this art thing, I realize more and more that I'm not as interested in the art production as I am the game development stuff. TBH, my interest is in games as art.. creating something that interacts with the user. I'm actually spending more time focused on coding and psychology lately.

The more i explore this whole thing, the more my patience is starting to wane for creating art assets for myself. Sometimes I wish there was just a magical repository of art stuffs that I could draw from, run a 'lil art direction pass to homogenize, and call it a day.

we've already got some fantastic assets like Arshlevon's base mesh.. but i mean seriously, as an industry, we've been making art assets for fucking YEARS. I just want to relinquish all "i made it myself" bullshit and just use any resource I can get my hands on, in a respectable way of course. I know about places like turbosquid, but this thread is basically asking the question:

what shortcuts are there out there? I'm talking about anything at all. procedural content generators, creative commons, pay-to-use assets, you name it.

This also brings up the discussion of quality.....

thoughts?

edit: I forgot to mention, I'm personally interested in simple stuff. I'm not trying to go next gen here.

I can't help but think this post goes completely against what this forum is all about :P.

But heck I know what you mean, i'm pretty into gaming and sometimes think making the art is a trivial matter when you look at the big picture.

Why not make a mod for a game? Pretty standard to reuse all their art assets and just heavily modify the gameplay.

Speaking of which dd you hear blizzard is planning on paying its mod community with its future battle net? I find this very interesting and wonder what it means for the future of gaming. It could be that one day games will simply be sandbox developement tools and art for users to generate content for, something to think about.

I thought Blizzard would make it possible for you to create mods or maps that you can decide to charge money for.

Game art changes all the time, different art styles and different specs and you want your game to be different from whats out there so that it will stand out from the rest. If everyone started using the same library of assets this would be tough.

well, if you dont mind paying to use stuff, why not post something on the freelance here, say what you are looking for. might get a couple of bites. that way you get exactly what you want.

as for the blizzard thing. they arent paying anyone for their mods. they are putting a marketplace into battle net (not at launch, but further down the road) so that you can choose to sell your maps if you think it will be a hit. chances are people are going to buy it then post it on a website for people to download anyways. also, alot of BAD maps will be on the marketplace cause every person that makes a map will think they can make big bucks off it.
