Ok, so I got a call for a job interview the other day, and part one of the interview is a 3D test. I have to make an object that they chose and of course, after years of doing 3D, I had to come across this problem during the test. I have until tuesday to finish, and today is Friday...and just turned to saturday(hit 12 oclock while i'm typing hahaha).
My problem is, when I export to .obj, it messes my geometry up. I made one whole model and then encountered this at the very end. After searching for hours, I realised I was just burning time, and figured it would save me time in the long run to start a new model from scratch, and what do you know, its happening again.
Heres an example of the newer mesh.

For some reason it won't let me post pics.

You could also try using some of the other .obj export settings/presets if you're on 2009 or higher. Or use the Guruware obj exporter plug-in for lower versions (same thing, was included in 2009 and up).
good luck mate !
I'm using Max 9 for the record.
Triangulating this before export didn't fix it?
I agree with everyone else that you should get the guruware .obj exporter it works a lot better than the max one.
And of course if you haven't already Reset X-Forms because that is the magic fix shit button
