i have been having trouble with 3ds max viewport directx shaders for some time now, basically when i us a directx material within max, as soon as i load/refresh a .fx file i get the usual 'error has occured. program will now close. want to save backup file?' thing.
when i start up shaderfx, i get to apply a directx shader and have it show up correctly, but crashes pretty fast after playing around with a few settings.
i have already updated graphic drivers, uninstalled and reinstalled shader fx. also tried on an older version of max that i had still installed, didn't work with that one as well, so i didn't bother reinstalling max yet. I am pretty sure that directx shaders have worked for me before, but i don't really know what has changed to cause this problem now

oh, and i'm running max 2009, on vista 64, gforce 8800 gt. if that helps.

Max always crashes on me when I turn on a directx shader and leave it minimized for a while for example. It has happened both at my home and my work PC so it's not a drivers/system problem.
