I remember a while back there was a plugin for max for ivy generation is there a location to download this still (preferably max 9) And if there's any explanations behind it that would be awesome!
its not a plugin, but a standalone application. The help file is bad and almost useless.
To start (and I could not find that on the website or help file) double click somewhere to define the orgin- that click start simulation to let it grow.
Once you are happy with the wire frame result - click end- simulation. At that point you start looking at the lower right collection of sliders and buttons where you can define the thickness of the roots and the size of the plants , try that out and once you are all done and happy export it finally as OBJ file.
In 3dsmax you can select the leafs through the face groups (1 = roots, 2 = leafs afaik) - so you can split the mesh after that.
And yes I highly recommend working with a mesh in max instead of a editable poly because it eats less memory in your RAM and scene file. I killed a project once because it was growing towards 700 MB per max file because of this stuff.
There are two Ivy Generators. One done by the Guruware (3dsmax plugin) which MoP linked to.
And "An Ivy Generator" written by Thomas Luft which is a stand alone app. Probably the one Renderhjs is thinking of. Both have their issues but seem to work pretty well. They sparked a lense flare like "add ivy to my scene" era for a while. I think they let you specify your own leaves and to avoid being a copycat I suggest you do that.
If you're going to bake it down there was a post somewhere by EQ about baking high poly plant life. never bookmarked it but I know its floating around...

theres quite an explanation on the site aswell.

and that one is standalone and compatible with all 3d applications because it exports OBJ files at the end.
