Alright so I'm doing the high poly of a shotgun with a extending stock, and I ran into a problem... When I try to put in control edges for indents on a cylinder it gives me a crease, and I can't figure a way to get it to work without some kind of shading error when I sub'd it...
(As you can see I need a control edge above the topmost row of indents.)
I have the
.obj up in filefront
and my reference image can be found
here.
Any ideas?

See this thread:

Or try something like this:

Hope that helps.
EDIT:
This is what I mean by starting out with more edges on your cylinder.
alright so I kinda get how I can do it... but now I have another question
If I were to have inset the polygons before extruding them inward, and then cut the controls like in your examples, would it be ok still? or do I need enough sides to accommodate the controls as well?
I'll try it next time I hop on the gun but not tonight...
also if anyone has other ideas I'd like to hear them.
