This looks awesome. I personally love number 1. But number 3 or 5 really keep the robot looking fierce. Keep the colours dull to keep the mood, although I could be proven wrong. Make the hands and feet of number 3 darker perhaps? Matching the chest.
This is a cool idea dude. I think you should refine the concepts a bit more tho, before you move on.
Your overall renderings have some interesting silhouettes, but you should clean them up and realize the forms a bit more. The robot is coming along, I'd just progress them 1 or 2 more iterations.
The boy also doesn't really look young to me, which might be confusing with this heavy of stylization. He looks more like a young man. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but if you were going for a 'boy', I'd soften up his features a bit more. His boots also bother me, as they don't seem to have much form to them. It looks like maybe you're going for makeshift clothing, but I'd still get some different boot reference -- clothing reference in general for that matter.
I just feel like once you get to modeling, you're going to run into a few problems. This has great potential though!
thanks guys! I'm really kind of on a time crunch, so, as much as I would love to spend a couple weeks concepting alone...I really just gotta keep moving forward!
I can definitely see where I can make him look younger! thanks for that!
This is looking really cool, I'm gonna be watching this thread eagerly. I agree that he doesn't look very young; he actually looks a bit old. His features seem very rough and it gives him a gruff older guy vibe. I love how the robot's coming so far, keep goin'!
Ok, so after a week of doing all my other school projects :poly122:, and also having my play open this last weekend....I am back to working on this! :poly124:
Here is my first round with the pirate boy!! This is my first time at trying to do a human character, but pretty happy with the results thus far!! Comments ALWAYS WELCOME!! :poly124:
fixed a LOT of the topology! Gonna redo the hands. (cause they sucked balls) annnnddd did a couple versions of the head/face for practice, but once again this is my first time. So, that part is the most challenging for me!
RE-modeled the gloves (Much happier about it this time) Some more minor tweaks and adjustments! HEAD WILL BE MODELED BY TOMORROW! (keep putting it off)
oh wow! Looking at it again those fingers could be definitely be made thicker! And, this is for my very first animation class that runs for 11 weeks. And so I've been teaching myself a LOT of stuff...I saw what rigging was gonna be like, and that's a whole beast I just don't have the time for.
Soooo, I just made ball joints to just to parent "rig" him!
ALLLLLLRIIIIGHHHTTT!!!! SO! No backgrounds, music, sound effects etc etc...
but this is the bare bones animation with some shitty lighting thrown in!!!! and the final rendering will be done by the end of next week!!!! :poly121:
I'm really excited about this since this is my first animation!! :poly142:
nice sequence- I can see it's rough, cos of the jumpy frame cutting in the middle, but mostly I really like it- good timing and framing. You may want to look at that final scene- you are too zoomed out from the boy to sell the gesture of the shrug, which is the "punchline" gesture, so needs to be more emphasised. Apart from that, I really think it's promising!
Hey dude glad to see your starting on the lighting. It would be nice to see it from an angle that is more common in the actual animation though, like the front. Otherwise the only thing is that blue light on his head is making him glow, maybe pull it back a little bit.
OK kids!!!! 11 weeks of work, and you have been here for all of it!! Just want to say thank you so much for everyone who helped with any suggestions or critiques, it really made a HUGE difference in the final product. I am really really excited about finishing this and I hope you all enjoy it!
Man I wish the quality didnt drop so much on Vimeo lol....ENJOY!!!!!!!

Kid concept
Awesome job so far.
Have some colors for the boy now!
1+4, for the character, I'd say blue is a good colour for a mechanic.

Page one of the Storyboard
but I will totally make him ACTUALLY look like a boy...when he's modeled!
Thanks for the support though!
Anyway, I'm pretty happy about it, but it's definitely MODELING TIME! (After 1 more storyboard page)

Edit: This is the low poly no turbo smoothing
I think the gloves are too thin on the finger tips.
Whats with the ball joints on a human?
Soooo, I just made ball joints to just to parent "rig" him!
Thanks for your suggestions!!!
OHHHKAAAYYYY!!
Almost done with the kid, finally...dig some tweaking to the gloves, and other stuff! Just about ready to start animating!!! WOOO!!!!
EDIT: DONE AND DONE!!!!!
I got super excited about him IN the robot!!
