Hey
I was wondering if anyone had any tutorials or if anyone could just help me with quick renders. Im using maya 2008. Ive been working on my modelling, but the default lighting with black background are just HORRIBLE renders... Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'd start there. His examples are in Max but the same principles apply to Maya.
EDIT:
Here's some Modo Product Shot Lighting and Compositing tutorials as well, I know not Maya sorry... but there's some good info in them about how to go about making some nice renders.

Just a nice grey on grey, with enough lighting to show off the model. For some reason, i doubt its anything super hard, but to me, it looks like a professional way to show off your stuff, and i would love to know how, so im not posting default render pictures.

Reading up on the basics of lighting, which I covered in that post will help.
You can't get away from good 3 point lighting, it will help in just about every kind of lighting set up.
