Right... so I just got 3DSMAX 9 to use a plugin that my indie sprite game needs. I find out that max 9 isn't the same as 2009...
What's the difference between 2009 and 3DSMAX9?
I found out max 9 was created years ago..but I've been using 8 for years.
I'm really behind aren't I?

This should help you out.
The thing I'm trying to get for my team uses max 2009. Why do they have Max 9 then 2008? Misleading to be honest.
If you make the conversion back to version numbers it goes a little something like this:
3dsmax 2008 = Max 9.5 : Skip it. It's a little buggy not much different than 9, mostly under the hood changes and arch vis crap
3dsmax 2009 = Max 10 : Worth it. new features, more stability, faster viewport. Easier DX materials in said viewport.
3dsmax 2010 = Max 10.5 : Skip it. Possibly use it after the first service pack rolls out. They tried to do something special but they mucked it up. They included some cool plug-ins but the biggest muck up was the UI for the main new plug-in... Hopefully they'll learn their lesson and 2011 will work like it should.
