As I know there are many musicians in this forum, I hope it's OK to post information about a VST plug-in here. Basic 64 is a synth plug-in which generates Commodore 64-like sounds and it's free. I found it yesterday and I think it would be fun to play with for the nostalgic people out there:

Here's a short mp3 I made, there are some effects and drums in addition to Basic 64:

Note: They have some other cool stuff in the freeware section.

    Thanks Parnell.

Minotaur0, I use FL Studio Fruity Loops Edition. It's the cheapest alternative I know. You can simply use your typing keyboard as a musical keyboard in FL Studio so you don't need a midi keyboard to start.

If you want to be able to save out files and don't want to drop the money for some experimenting, i can recommend LinuxMultimediaStudio. Even though the name might not say it, there is a version for windows aswell and it is completely free. It has the same basic functionality as FL Studio, the only thing that does not work properly is automation tracks but using vst's and doing some basic stuff goes pretty smoothly :) It also has another Commodore 64 chip emulator built in called SID.

Edit: i just checked the video to see what they show, and it's pretty bad. Don't judge the software by the video because the guy that taped it is completely dicking around.

    Cool, I'll give both a try =)

Another cheap software-package is Energy XT. xt2 is very simple to use, but less of an insane modular toolbox than xt1. You get both when you buy xt2!
Oh, and you can load both of them into other hosts (FLstudio, Ableton live, Cubase, etc...) as a vst/vsti, which is very, very useful.
editL Oh, and there's also a few other plugins that do this sort of thing, like this: http://createdigitalmusic.com/2006/07/10/8-bit-nintendo-sounds-as-a-free-windowsmac-plug-in-add-an-nes-to-garageband-stompbox-nes-fx/

odo ( http://www.odosynths.com/ ) has a free one as well
