Well it ain't much yet, but here's what I got so far. I need to work a lot more on my high poly modeling so feel free to critique. This workshop should be very helpful.
The gap in the back where the handle meets the main bit seems too large maybe?
Also its a little hard to tell, but it looks like on your floaters you're missing the edge loop on the edge that is planar to the surface, which will give you a soft intersection.
Breakneck - Yeah it's floating
EQ - Assuming we're talking about the same thing, I think the gap is fine, I put the profile picture in max and copied it closely. Thanks for the advice on the floating geo, I didn't think about that, I'll be sure to change it.
Vassago - ha, my solution was pretty lame. but here's what I did:
ah cool, thanks Keen. That's similar to what I ended up doing as well. Just urks me when trying to make a real object and I can't see all sides of it, heh. Thanks again.
Bah, well looks like I need to rethink my plan because my bake came out terrible. I'm pretty sure my main problem is I have too many separate pieces in my UV's. So I'm going to try and keep as much of it in one piece as I can.
Any other tips would be greatly appreciated too.
On a side note, this is the first time I baked in the diffuse and I think that's going to save me a lot of time
I'm having struggles baking too. I'm double checking my hires mesh for errors. Usually that affects the baking process. Also sometime turning the edges on the low poly mesh helps the baking process. Such a pain in the ass.

My updates haven't been much, but here's a little more. I got the day off tomorrow, so hopefully I'll make a lot more progress then. In the meantime:
Nice work so far.
looks good keen!
I think I'm going to call the high poly done. Gonna start finishing the low poly now.

Also, how did you terminate the handle in the bottom of the chainsaw? I can't any ref pics of that, so I have no idea what's going on down there, hah.
I know it would never be seen in game, but I'd like to know..
