I refer to these glows around lights as halos. Usually done with a forward facing quad set to additive in front of the street light model or whatever. Just wondering if there is a more common name everyone is using.
well it depends on the technique used to create them and the effect its achieving as they are different depending on whever its an atmospheric glow or a lens based effect
I was going to say Corona, it comes to mind first for me. I've definitely heard that one because of unreal engine. Beside that, it's called light glow in Maya and I'd definitely know what you mean if you said "halo". Other than those, I'm not sure if I would understand what you meant just by the word, but it's easy enough to explain.
well, bloom could work, sure, but it's use overlaps a different process defined by the term. the popular use for the term bloom typically describes the post process effect, not the billboard particle effect they are talking about here. that'd kinda cause the similar confusion you may get when using the term skinning to define texturing and the vert weighting process in rigging, which does occur from time to time; old schoolers will still refer to texturing as skinning and textures as skins.

again it depends on whever its the name of the effect or the technique used to create that effect, the thread title is not clear on this, personnally i think face-on coronas are on the way out, post effect based stuff can acheive much better results unless were talking about fancy lensflare style shite,
