I saw this a while ago with some humorously bad engligh subtitles to boot.
The story definately felt more of a children's film than previous fare. The Ghibli films which I like best are those that can be enjoyed by children and adults alike, and so this one didn't leave much of an impression on me.
ya, maybe it's just my old age kicking in, but that trailer didn't do much for me. It didn't have the same mystical amazing feel of so many others. . . I'll probably still see it.
I really think that the american celebrity voices are totally ruining everything! I really cant stand it much more. WTF happened to actual animation voice actors?
Yeah I am usually impressed by his stuff, but this doesn't look like my kind of party, even totoro I could get down with.
I did just see howls moving castle and have to say that was pretty awesome. I think the added bizarreness was the english dub with christian bale and billy crystal; I mean that's just messed up and made it all the more awesome.
i'll be checking this out, when I can get a hold of it with jap audio though.. always find those dubs really distracting, much more than reading subtitles
Thought it was pretty great, slow starter but in line with Totoro. And for kids, I can't imagine it getting any better than that. Let's atleast rejoice that the rule of the retard son, Goro, is over (Gedo Senki anyone?).

Yeah, I never watch it with the dubs. And the subtitles usually aren't 100% of what they are actually saying, so it helps to understand the lingo a bit.
I just caught Ponyo last night with my wife... we LOVED it Everyone needs to go see this so we get more Ghibli films in the states instead of Snow Dogs and crap like that :P
I saw it on the weekend. In the theater which was nice. It was pretty good, def more on the kidzy side but still really good. Miyazaki has been central to my devlopment as an artist and story teller, so anything that studio Ghibli does gets my attention. That being said it's not a master work, but it still has that Miyazaki feel!
It's definitely not my favorite Miyazaki movie, but it's still very good, doesn't really feel any more "kiddy" than some of his others.
I thought the script was a bit strange, and maybe a tad slow-ish towards the middle.
There's a sea storm scene that is just absolutely amazing, some of the wackiest animation I've seen in a Ghibli film.
I still think Chihiro is his best movie (although Nausica and Totoro are personal favorites).
I kinda thought the ending was a bit lackluster, but then in retrospect I thought it was meant to show that the "test" was really just showing the adults that they did love each other by promising to them; THEY already knew how much they loved each other, and I think the movie is about that test of love. Still, it did come off a bit lackluster :P

It is in line with Kiki's Delivery Service & My Neighbor Totoro than it is to Princess Mononoke & Spirited Away. Of course it is still worth seeing.

B
Spirited Away has a flawless dub though.
John Lasseter personally oversaw it.
