Just venting here.
So I go to play Company of Heroes - Tales of Valor with my dad having not played it for a night or two. Upon loading and logging into my Relic account im informed there is a patch...great, 45megs should be done in an instant...starts downloading...and watches as the magnificent speed of the bar zooms along to complete,I install and play the game..But NO!
what actually happened was our game was canned for the night because it seems like every other person in the world was downloading the same patch from the same server as me,meaning it was going at about 0.01kb a sec....took many hours to complete...i don't actually know how long it took because we leaved it downloading on one computer over night.
We instead went back to Left4Dead which also meant my dad had to switch his harddrive over because L4d is on Vista, CoH is on XP...why is that you maybe wondering, that my friends is because CoH is under the 'Games for Windows' tag.....yet oddly Ive yet to install a 'games for windows' game that actually works under Vista, Gears of War,Grid and now CoH:ToV have all frozen on the install at about 75% done on Vista...yet work fine on XP...so I blame Microsoft for that.
So we had a good game on L4D despite a shaky start...some hurling of abuse at me and my dad due our rustiness by a couple of twats, but apart from that it was a fine game.
So having now got the 45meg CoH patch working on one computer we try it on the other. It downloads and Installs then 'ERROR!'.........not enough disc space......oh great, plus of course the damage has been done....an install has been interrupted half way through.
So I uninstall some stuff....try again 'Error' patch install cannot continue, advise you reinstall CoH.....so I did...patch downloads and I get the same error. So I guess my system registry has been changed by the patch that failed first time round.....next move Reformat, need to clear the space anyway.
So looks like my Saturday after noon is sorted....
but after looking at the patch documentation on my dads computer where it was all a success there is some minor balance issues a bunch of multiplayer fixes and some fixes to the world builder...i.e NOTHING THAT WOULD EFFECT THE GAME FOR ME AND DAD OVER LAN AGAINST THE AI!!!....so WHY am I FORCED to download this effing update which has now borked the game for me.
*Rant over....

Last time i checked that was multiplayer but yeah. I know what you are feeling.
agreed.
however... I think people would, and do, moan more if devs did not update post launch. I agree as much effort as devs could reasonably forsee should go into finishing before release, but in any engineering that can be labelled 'complex' and especially when it is used by the masses it is not possible to predict every outcome so maintenance is required... hence why in industries where the consumer base is a continuing subscriber of the product/service a very high majority of income for the developing company is through maintenance.
Yup, there are going to be things needing to be fixed after release. It's just a fact of life not everything can get found and fixed prior to release.
Also, I know it's frustrating, but if you are running out of space installing a 45mb patch, you have other issues. You can't blame the developer for that.
At least now you'll either buy a bigger hard drive or install games on a different partition/drive or check how much space you have before updating and/or delete useless junk so that it wont ever happen again
yeah I know. whatever.. I know games are more complicated today, but I sure as hell liked playing Mario games and not having to patch them.

If I went online to play (clicked 'Online' in a multiplayer menu) I anticipate ill be updated to the version thats the same as everyone else...if this problem occurred then its bad luck on my part and I have no reason to complain.
But the fact is I cannot even play single player let alone LAN without getting this update to work and the fact ive borked the computer while trying to get it to work is whats really got under my skin in this case.
and yes Brett, your correct and so what it does means is im gonna be working on my gun sight for the Monthly workshop tonight...stay turned .

Yep. Guerrila does this with KZ2 and it really pisses me off. Let me play what I paid for damnit! :poly127:
there's lots of things worse happending in this world, people die from hunger, some people's friends are multi-handicapped and shit, someone lost their business, and you're
wailing over a borked game?
with an attitude like that, you'll never make it in the games industry.
here at polycount, people don't care for your problems.
there's lots of other great games. why do you play the ones that cause you grief?
i played empire total war, and it crashed all the time, so i stopped playing it, and played something that worked.
enuff trolling, seriously, i feel your pain Bronco.
