Ok so I wondering after completing a high poly model in max, what is your work flow for creating the low poly around it. If their are any plugins or tools to help in this process I'm all ears because I'm still poly modeling around the high poly by hand moving every vert, and it seems like there would be some tools out there to make this task more simple. Thanks for any insight or links you can supply. (And I'm not really interested in poly cruncher, I'm looking for tools to help speed up good typo) Thanks

it uses some kind of volume normal projection (quadtree / voxel stuff or so) and therefore allows you to do even complex stuff that loops around objects and then for example simply slide it.
By default I agree you often cant see what matters at all because it all gets clipped away, but with the xRay mode (in max 2009 you have to disable properties by layer mode) it works very nice.
Silo on the other hand (if I am not mistaken) simply projects on anything that is frozen or locked. Silo is a great tool for retopo jobs but their instance functionality does not get close at all to the one in max (no other app. does).
I am not sure how Modo behaves but I assume something smarter as the old packages with their scripts
For taking stuff out of ZB that's too high for even Meshlab to load, I split up the mesh in ZB first (hide part of it, group visible, unhide, group split, export) and turn on "preserve boundaries" in Meshlab so the part will fit back together.
There's a bug in Meshlab to watch out for though: When you go to save the decimated mesh, if you don't type out the full filename (extension included) and choose a file format, it'll go through the motions of saving, but not save anything. Like, if you just selected part of the name of the file you loaded initially and added "02" or "_medium", for instance, rather than typing it out, it wouldn't save. I have no idea why or how it makes a difference, but it evidently does.
