So for my Game asset classes final project, i'm doing a steampunk vespa. I'm sick of not performing well in that class and im going to really try and make this a good one.
Here's the Hipoly so far. I stil have alot of details to model out.
pretty good start, altho it's hard to see the steampunk in it without the details right now. but the model looks very clean so far.
what i often do is take viewport screengrabs, and draw some details ontop in ps.
Hey man looks like you have a nice start so far, there are definitely some nice details going on in the front of the vespa. Idk if you have come across this yet but here is a pretty sweet steampunk moped that might help stir up some new ideas.
Hard to comment, obviously, when you're not done. I will say I like the round part on the back, next to the tail pipe, though. I could definitely see some steam punk in that. Interested to see more, man.
I really like how the back end came out, the torches are a nice touch. The vespa is definitely on it's way to being a cool prop. I think once you get it to the finer details, you could use something (like a twine/bracket) to help secure the tail pipes to the seat/engine area. As they stand now, I'd be willing to bet that they'd be pretty flimsy.
Lookin' good, can't wait to see the finished high poly.
Ok here's the final Hipoly. If i tweek it anymore i'll have gadgets and bolts and shit all over the place. I dont want it to be too busy.
I want specific points of interest, ie the back engine, the front ignition thing, and the pouches on the side, ontop of calm points, like the tire guards and the front of the vespa.
I didnt want to go overkill with the steampunk. Partly because i dont have time to model that kind of stuff right now, and partly because im not good at concepting haha.
Turning out pretty legit man. I like the new additions of the back and the seat. Mostly the addition of the plates to the back. And the netting and storage for the seat.
Like Mark said it would be cool to have something to help hold up the pipes. Maybe bungee chord type things.
Anyways a solid start. Can't wait to see it all finished. Keep up the good work.
Yeah man, that looks sick. I don't know why, but I especially like the pouches on the inside of the front and strapped to the seat. It's a small detail, but I think it totally sells it. Nice work, holmes.

Totally agree, I'm realllllly digging those pouches, can't wait to see it finished.
If it were mine, id tuck in a few "busy" spots of tech, sticking out in strategic places. Right now (to me) it seems slightly modern b/c of all the sleek shapes.
Heres a pic of a bike. Check out how makeshift it looks. Thats atleast what I think of when i hear steam punk
I'm hard at work on the lowpoly. I'm going to try and finish it up tomorrow since it's my day off. I havent optimized the geometry yet, just goign in and getting the first pass done.
It's at about 2000 tris.
I'm also trying for a somewhat water-tight model. I really like how the AO's come out on airtight models, they just look cooler for lack of a better word. The body is one piece, the three pouches are one piece, and the engine/tubes are one piece.
When you say you're going to make it watertight, do you mean the pouches and everything? I've never noticed a big difference in my ao's between water tight and non, but it seems like it would take an awful lot of polys to seal everything in there. That's just me though. I'd be interested in seeing what you're talking about with the ao's, either on here or in class on Friday man. In any case, awesome work, you're awesome, blah blah blah.
I like your strategy with the modular pieces Wes, I was going to recommend that. It's alot easier to bake down AO and Normals for one pouch and have them repeated than trying to bake them all at once. Looks like you have symmetry as well which should cut your texture space usage in half, plenty of room for details. Don't forget the smoothing groups as well, not only to define hard edges along the wheel guards but for clean normals as well.
Very nice model. Huge fan of anything steam punk. Your model has given me some inspirational ideas for my steam punked character. http://boards.polycount.net/showthread.php?t=63567
Keep up the great work!

I mean i do little rough sketches of the parts im modeling, but none of it would look like anything to anyone else.

I didnt wnat to get too complicated with the steampunk-ness of it, seeing as how i have 3 other projects i need to finish for school.
nrek- Thanks for that, that looks real badass. I'm going to take the netting around the seat, i really like that look.
Thanks for the crits guys. I really appreciate it. Now let's hope i can provide!

It's hard to explain
i'll tell you thursday in class hah.
The high poly looks sick, great job.
Keep up the great work!
It stands at 9k tris, which is abit much I think, but it works.
I have some normal seam issues which im going to follow a tutorial to fix. It's most obvious on the front tire.
Ilya Nedyal is a tough act to follow hah. His vespa is amazing!
if it werent for a class...i'd gladly hand it over.
