Seems new episodic monkey island from tell tale games is coming. As well as a remake of secret of monkey island with new graphics, remastered score and full voice overs.
episodic content is by tell tale and for the wii and pc and the remake is being done by lucas arts for the xbla and pc.
As far as I'm concerned, this year's E3 has been made worthwhile by this announcement alone. I love Monkey Island, and I can't wait to see what Tell Tale is able to do with the franchise. Tell Tale has had Steve Purcell helping out with Sam & Max, I have my fingers crossed that he is going to be providing a lot of the concept art for the new adventures of Guybrush Threepwood.
I don't know exactly how they are going to contextualize The Secret of Monkey Island's controls for the XBox 360. But its still nice to see one of PC gaming's greatest classics made available to a younger audience.
I'm praying that they don't mess up the voice acting. They need to go back and get some of the actors who worked on The Curse of Monkey Island. (the third game) That was a pretty solid cast. The art style they are going for wouldn't have been my first choice, but it isn't too bad either. A more stylistic approach is definitely the right direction, I just hope that they intend to continue cleaning up some of those screenshots that have been released. (a few of the backgrounds looked a tad sloppy)
As for the new game, I seriously hope that Tell Tale is able to enlist Ron Gilbert to help out with the writing. I know the Grumpy Gamer is currently occupied with his own title, but it would be fantastic to see him return to the Monkey Island franchise. Having this developed by Tell Tale, and not in-house by LucasArts, makes this possibility seem far more likely.

Exactly what I've been saying this morning. I'm sure there will be a lot more news this week, but this trumps anything else for me. I can't wait for this.

i saw over at gamespot that guybrushes voice is going to remain intact and done by the guy who did curse and escape from monkey island.(which is good i hear his voice in the old ones when i play them now and then. as for the new one the video show yet another redesign of guybrush, looks like he did in revenge of Le-chuck, goatee back as well but in full 3d, the writer from the more recent games are back. (3 - onwards) as an avid monkey island fan this is the best news i've had all day!
I don't mind the backgrounds. It's just amazing how awkward the characters feel in relation to the BG. At least in the original everything fit together nicely. Still, it would be fun to replay.
I'm cautiously optimistic, even though I probably shouldn't be.
The remake looks, ehr, bad. LucasArts have time and time again proven they don't give a toss about point and click games these days, re-releasing one isn't going to make us like LucasArts again.
not really impressed by any of this, will see how it plays but monkey island 3 still looks more fun and stylish and visually rich than any of this stuff
boah whats up with the 3d game? the concepts are great, the models seem to be good too but the shading what the hell did they capture it out of the max viewport? really it totally destrioys all the work that has been put into, damn what a pity
All of the games built on the Telltale Tool engine look like that. They really need to do something about the lighting.
Actually, Wallace And Gromit looked like they'd made some steps towards improvement, but I guess Monkey Island was developed at the same time so didn't benefit from the new tech. Nevertheless, it should be an enjoyable game.
why does it has to look so disneyland like? (monkey island 3 used a similar style and it was nice but I don´t want another mi3)
I´d like to see a more realistic and darker approach.. maybe even in 3d.. I think it´s possible to make a funny game even if it´s not screaming from every pen stroke
I'm pretty stoked for this. So far this is the most exciting thing to me to come from e3. That said I want the original and all the other LucasArts classics on the iphone! I don't really want to replay it on a Xbox.
I´d like to see a more realistic and darker approach..
*Jackablade Saps Rollin and padlocks him in a box*
Lucasarts: "What'd That guy say?"
Jackablade: "He said colourful, cartoonish graphics are wicked awesome"
isnt there a scummvm version for iphone? i bet you can easily emulate those game i mean... scummvm exists for like palms and gps navigators
There most likely is. But I don't think it is an official release for the App Store. For those consumers who don't feel like jailbreaking their iPhones or iPod Touches, it would be nice for LucasArts to port some of their classics to the iPhone. Besides, these games would benefit from some tweaking to their control schemes to make them a better fit on the iPhone. The dev costs for changes like this would be very slight, and LucasArts could be making fat profits off of iPhone ports. (they could sell each game separately, and make anywhere from $5 - $10 off of each copy)
funnily i´m playing mi1 for a week on the nokia 5800 per scummVM.. very cool
btw.. jackblade.. you'r not putting anything in any box.. not as long as my EPIC-grey-in-grey fiends are around
no just kidding.. mi2 is darker and still very colorfull.. 8)
