Hey guys.
I was just wondering how many of you had seen the massive black tutorial downloads. I know most of you guys are 3d but I'm sure there are some interested people round here
. They are pretty darn cheap for what they are, and i would highly recommend them.
Not all of you guys visit conceptart.org, and so im not sure how many of you know they are doing this
.

Also try and resist the urge to pirate them
, they really are worth the money you pay for them.

but the one where chan does the speed painting is rad ie: the illustration of the tentacle monster about to eat the girl. there are a couple of "tricks" in there that are worth 15 bucks. also, for sorry....but "newbie" concept peeps, the concept exploration by chan is good. he goes over how to concept four different styles for a client. and that can be pretty valualbe.
If youre that into watching people paint theres plenty of places that have free videos that are just as informative. I think that most of the reason to buy dvds as opposed to just looking at stepbystep images/videos is what they have to say and most of the time artists arent that fun to listen to heh. With the exception of Iain McCaig, whos a star.

Even if thier production values arent quite as high as those of gnomons you certainly get more bang for your buck with these.
Though I dont know why either should be considered better than the other though, both are a resource and both provide information. You would probably get a more rounded education information stream if you watched from both sources. .
And i question the worth of simply watching sketching vids... ive watched many of them but you don't actually know what the artist was doing most of the time. Its like trying to learn how to drive by watching from the sidelines of a racetrack. yeah you can see where they are driving and where they go slow and fast but you dont know all the important stuff going on inside the cockpit.
Also remember that the people that make these vids no matter thier source really do deserve any payment they get, and i would rather people actually offered alot of this stuff for a small fee as opposed to giving it out for free as it is undermining the liveley hood of other artists as well as giving those artists a bit more of an income for thier efforts. Not to say that i think all information should be pay for view, just some of it.
This may not so apply that well to painting (since its more of a free and artistic expression) but I often have the feeling that with tutorial DVD's like max, zBrush, flash, photoshop,... its often just stuff repeated and slightly different interpreted from the free internet. The only reason than imo. why people buy those DVD's is because they got fooled or they need a pricey reason to learn.
Same applies often to books especially if they are more a bit technical and less artistic - the real important and tricky stuff is often only online available on some blog or hidden sub section of a website.
His Visual Storytelling dvds are freaking awesome. Everyone should get them
