Hey guys, im glad to find a Game designer community. Hard to find answers on certain issues. In any case heres something I mocked up yesterday. Squirrel ninja;
Here are some of my weapons. Keep in mind they were made in order as they appear. So The first one was one of my first ever models and has uber high polies. The last one is my most recent and has least amount of polies.

Thanks for the tips. Well They arent really intended for games right now. The last one is a game practice. The others were early models of mine but IM going to reduce the poly count for game compatability.
hey, i'm new to the forums but i thought i'd post my 2 cents about your work .
First, the revolver is and sniper seem pretty generic in style and design but the H.O.G shotgun is brilliant, the idea of putting brass knuckles on a gun is kickass, did you come up with this idea? if so, good job
Picard, I am interesting in discussing the possibility of you modeling for our project. If you wouldn't mind dropping me an email at jonathanthebruce@gmail.com or giving me your email so that I might email you, I would appreciate it.
Hopefully this will meet the light of day IN a recent project im working on.
This is a Bic Pen Crossbow.
Its supposed to be as is a very small "Person" Put it together with rubber bands and pen parts and paper clips. Watcha think?
- Like Sectaurs said, do not render on white. It makes it difficult to see what's going on inside the object's silhouette. One common solution is to use a gradient background that goes from around 33% grey at the top to 66% grey at the bottom. If you want a solid color background though, stick with a light grey like 66% or 75%.
- As a general rule for graphic design (this includes websites), do not use odd fonts for paragraphs of text. Stick to common fonts like Arial or Verdana for lengthy text. You can use flavor fonts for logos and captions, but it makes sentences hard to read.
- Don't put the copyright symbol on your images. It's enough for you to just sign it with "Picard 2009".
- Add in a mid-intensity light from underneath the object to simulate bounced lighting from the ground, and possibly a side light directly from the left or right. Usually 1 main light source and 2 weaker extras gives decent results (try googling 3-point lighting). Right now the lighting feels unnatural and 3D rendery.
- On the sniper rifle, the lack of a connection from just above the grip to the top of the stock feels really awkward, like after enough use the stock might snap off.
- On the slingshot, you need to personalize the textures so they don't feel like they were just slapped onto a 3D model. Pay attention to where the edges are on your model and try roughing them up with some light scratches, and put some dirt in the places where it would collect over time.
You're coming along well though, and I do really like the design of the shotgun and gatling gun. Keep at it!
One of the many things I need to work on is lighting and rendering,, I cant seem to ever pull it off thanks for the tips.
As far as the actual design of the sniper rifle I would just assume use my imagination and say there might be a supporting rod through the handle, but a noted observation.
Yeah I did just slap some mats on truth be told Im planning on doing some mapping. BUt Its an arduous task as are many tasks in 3d.
Hey all, I actually have a lot more work to post since my last post. For now though; I keep hear "Diversify your portfolio" As my portfolio is still amatuer and my work needs "WORK" I figure diversify is something I should do.
So i started a "Cute" line of chars. The first is my duck char and out of the 3 im going to post, the duck is the coolest. The next two once I stage and snap them are a Platypus and a turtle.
Since this is a sketchbook, I guess I should put some concept art in here huh. These were all done in phostoshop. Well I have a few characters from a project that fell through. Enjoy and Im aware the lighting may be off in a few instances and the blue character isnt really anatomically sound.
Ive been working on some Hammers for an armory scene for my college final. Yes, I rendered on white I know, I prefer it that way.
[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0qzOK1p8ai4"]Hammer Of Nord[/ame]:
The Hammer Of Nord has many legends surrounding its history but really Its just the hammer of a legendary Viking warrior. It is said that The Hammer Of Nord has been embued with the power of being really badass looking.
[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sw0HnBDaGyo"]Omega Hammer[/ame]:
The Omega Hammer was forged with no other intention than to be a lightweight effective weapon for combat. Fortunately the hammer smith crafted the Omega hammer so well it resonates like a tuning fork and is said to hypnotize enemies and slow them down dropping their defenses.
[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=afFbUkdZjPY"]Hammer Of Twisted Lightning[/ame]:
As are many legends they are sung with embelishment. This hammer is no acception. Many have said the HOTL has been augmented with the force of lightning. However the hammer smith sings a different tale. It like the omega was crafted purely for aesthetic purposes, although, while the red hot hammer fresh from the forge was cooling outside, a storm blew over and the hammer was struck by lightning, due to the state of the hammer when struck it retained a great amount of electric charge.
I had this old school Zero Rockman action figure (megaman) His buster was awesome looking so I decided to render it crits and comments always welcome. (Unless you wanna tell me what color to render on) Like 980 polies.
some great(ender's game) and some strange flat looking sketches (whatever the hell that last one was, work on the face it look slikes she's drunk lol) there, keep up the good work.
Well, back about a month before High School graduation I started a sketchbook. Well, I found that sketch book and there was a lot of great stuff in it. The character Psoria was one of the better sketches, but It was less than great because of the cruddy colored pencils I used. I dont know where I got those pencils but if I had to guess it was my little cousins, in any case they were horrible. So, I put the char in photoshop and started but just wanting to enhance a few things and one thing led to another and I overhauled the whole sketch. Tell me what you think.
your real medium works look about 10x better than the ones you dropped a can of photoshop on, try to avoid dodge and burn, and over using effects in photoshop, along with the digital airbrush look. Theres a couple different routes artists tend to take, 1: make it look cool 2: make it look real, and your digital pieces arent doing either.
I dont know, it could just be me, but i dare you to ask anyone, of the two last pictures you posted (one shopped on not, of the girl) most people will say the real media one looks better.
my favorite of yours so far is the pirate you sketched out, it looks great, cool style.
yeah the pencil stuff does look better, theres alot to learn when digital painting. My advice dont use airbrushes or soft brushes so much harder brushes often give better results, dont use black in your shadows so much. I have to agree with achillesian at this point the pencil/real media images look more appealing
Right, thats a preference I have always had with my work, black and white is how I roll. SO really this whole color thing is new to me as strange as that sounds. Although, I dont color dodge or burn, the only tool like that I use is blur. But I see what Your saying.
Thats how i create characters. Theres a layer for every piece that way I can get appropriate value and overlapping. Yeah the legs always end up feeling a bit long. Even on the prometheus character in working on.
Well, My computer has been Out of commission for a while but I knocked the pawn out and even put an alien pilot in there, I have two versions, one with the pilot and one without him.
I kind of felt like illustrating avenging the dying art of chivalry. So I started sketching in Ms Paint (dont hate) So it started as just the knight then ended up moving on to a sword the the dragon and so on I ended up with this:
So obviously this isnt the final, but I knew what I wanted to do with it, so I put it into PS and kept going and going and going, a little fiddling here and there, I didnt quite do what I wanted with the fire or the pathway to the castle but I ended up with this, crits and advice welcome:

what texture size/can we see the textures?
don't render on white. neutral colors present your work much better. white destroys.
might want to tone down your signature. font that large and bolded is a bit much, don't you think?

This was a fable 2 thing I did.
This was my first compilation in Photoshop so its sloppy.
This was my final for a college course about a year ago.
I did this in High school, its my idea of the buggers from Enders Game.
A death eldar from Warhammer 40k.
This was for my ex, again, one of my earlier Photoshop projects.

you definitely are into compositing

Been drooling over Star Citizen. Almost obsessed. I wanted to create a bounty hunter ship.
Behold the Proxus Bee-killer.

Textures arent mine. SHip parts (guns engines and pilots) Belong to RSI.
Purely conceptual.
