Sounds like a malware/adware/spyware. If so try
Malware Bytes
http://malwarebytes.org/
and/or
Super Anti Spyware
http://www.superantispyware.com/
Hopefully one of those can remove it then install Spyware Blaster for some activex protection for Internet Explorer.

Or, if you are using Firefox get the addon NoScript

Glad I could help
That's a pretty scary freelance story, haven't had that one happen to me yet. Hopefully it was just a infected file or something and not on purpose. Maybe you can bug em for some more $ for your troubles now

I think it can't be something malicious, but hey you never know. i might just mail them and ask
