Hi guys! I'm on a games art and design course at university, and in the cuttent economy, Ive been having hell finding a work placement for my sandwich year. (kind of a year out doing work experience). Luckily I have scored an interview with the UK based, Jagex - of Runescape fame - to join their 'In Player Support' staff.

Now the problem is, I replied to an email saying I was free any time after the 28th - when all my big university hand ins take place. being sleep deprived I didnt think through the possibility of them choosing tomorrow (30th) as a date or that the job is in cambridge, a fair train ride away.

So! I would like to pick your collective brain for what a web based/mmo games company would want from me, what they expect of me, and what you may have learned from your own experiences!

First up, correct me if I am wrong, but this is essentially a position as a GM.. right?

All help and advice appreciated! 'Dude thats not a deisgn job you suck' less so. :poly124:

Sounds like a GM role to me.

I'm guessing thing you're going to have to prove is that you can put up with idiots asking you stupid questions endlessly or flaming you without ever getting aggressive about it.

Pants are advisable. Also you might want to work on your spelling for a GM job...

Well seems like you are going to be there to support players and make their experience better, however dont assume and be sure to ask what exactly you will be doing and adjust :P. I think Dr_Graevling works there as a artist, but he hasnt posted much here lately though, so sending him a pm might be pointless :(.
Study the studio now, what they are doing and such, try out runescape if you havent already, its pretty quick to get into and get the basics.
    Good luck!

think of it like a quizz, show, you get every question you did not expect. (and coffee, dont worry)

stay relaxed, take some deep breaths and slow your heartbeat so you are back to normal when sitting there. (dont think of oh shit what if?, just be your best)

take your time when you speak,
so taking 2 or 3 seconds before awnsering or continueing your story is fine,
it also allows you to form a better awnser within that time, so it only makes things easier on you

if you get a question you dont know the awnser to, say you'd like to get back on that, you dont need to have a perfect awnser to everything right away.

be happy with the outcome, what it might be,
know that you learn alot from an interview and its always a good experience.

    good luck man :)

    yeah, asking alot isnt weird,

finding out what your job really is after a few weeks is not cool, so know what your job is going to be,
if that means playing runescape all day now, do so,

Don't forget to find an opportune moments to say "That's what she said!" Then make sure to laugh louder than everyone else at your joke.

I did a test for them before along with a friend, they seem like nice guys. Just relax, its just a gap year position; I now you have to get a good one, but its not as if its a high pressure real job scenario. :) So keep that in mind and dont get nervous. Sounds to me like they want to hire you, so that should also keep the nerves off. Working in an MMO environment should be fun, and I'm sure you'll have loads. I know you've got loads of deadlines at the moment, but I've left the country and travelled by air and rail for interviews, so taking the train aint a big deal.

    Good luck! :)

-Research their games. Its good to show you have interest in their games.

    - Dont lie,if you dont know something ,dont say you do. It will come back and bite you in the ass later. But express a desire to learn the things you dont.

    - Try to be enthusiastic, not too much but show that you are someone eager to be working with this company. Personality can go a long way. Its better to train someone who not as experienced but has the right attitude instead of someone who is experienced who has the wrong attitude.

    - Thank them for their time and your interview.

    And good luck

Job is a job, experience is experience. I bet you're doing fine =)
Still, good luck to you! Hopefully your commute won't kill you!

Take comfort in that even if you flub it really hard, you still learn something from it and the next time around it will be easier.
