Viewport differs from Render

Hey guys I can't seem to figure out this problem, and I'm assuming it is a pretty amateur question, so I apologize in advance. So my specular map is being rendered different from what my viewport is showing. Here is what I mean:

(left is viewport, right is mental ray render)
ODST_Rendering.jpg

1. Highlight on visor is gone.
2. Corner of chestpiece where metal is exposed is muted in the render.
3. More highlights gone from waist.
4. leg armor highlight is gone.
5. Inner thigh highlight is gone.

When texturing it seems easiest to change the texture and then see the results changed in the viewport. Is this bad practice? Should I be using the MR renders to see my changed results?

Thanks!

Not really, texture maps are tuned to their specific renderer/shaders anyway. Ideally you'd have a shader that emulates, or is pretty much, your in-game shader. To get your textures to match up in Mental Ray and the viewport, I'd just use max's procedural brightness/contrast and not bother with going back and forth between PS and max.
