Wife wants to play a MMO again....

So ive done the WoW thing before raided pre-bc and did some bc runs and quit just not feeling the drive to get back into wow. I use to play FFXI before wow was wondering if anyone on here plays FFXI or use to play? I know the majority here that play mmo's are probably wow users.

Looking for a server to join on FFXI....

I went off MMOs for a while but recently have been playing guild wars, its a bit of light entertainment. Can't help with FF though.

I'm about to give Warhammer Online another go, but the server populations are still ridiculously low. I enjoyed it far more than WoW.
Guild Wars is also really fun, no subscription fees and the good thing about it is the storyline aspect. If there aren't many people about, each main city has henchmen (NPCs) which you can party with.

The BIGGEST mistake you can ever make in your life is to allow your wife access to any computer or mass communication device. Seriously. I've got to get Sims 3 now, you realize this!? I'd also recommend GW...though my MMO knowledge / interest is pretty low..my wife played GW for a while and seemed to enjoy it.

I used to play FFXI. Played for years straddling the line of casual/hardcore. As soon as I KNEW that I had crossed the line, I gave it up cold turkey. I just couldn't justify the time spent playing it. I probably won't ever play another MMORPG, but I still miss FFXI from time to time.

    Curious about Old Republic though.

All the mmos i play are for 1 month as much, i reach level 40+ and i delete the game forever. There are too many greater games than a mmorpg, that you can play casually without spending too much time.

What i would like to play for some time is Aion, Tera, Blade and Soul, Mabinogi heroes, etc.

the last year i was playing requiem, RF Online and Granado Espada, free to play and nice enough if you play with friends. With the pass of time all those games lose interest, and you see how servers are with less players. There's no reason to play a game so much time, 2 months is a lot imho. The wow addicts have lost too much time hahaha, is time of life what they lose.

BTW, have you ever wondered why characters in FFXI have their heads so small?

http://www.onrpg.com <check out the forums in the section of free games, there's a thread where people puts captures of the games they are playing.

I never really liked FF11 that much. My roommate is playing it on 360 currently but after watching many hours of it, I still dont see much appeal in it.
WoW does have much more interesting quests and environments.

Give Ragnarok Online a try. It's extremely cute with lots of classes. I played it from alpha well into pay to play, several years.

Wasted 5 years of my life playing FFXI, really really hardcore addicted. SquareEnix is a terrible MMO developer, they don't know what they're doing half the time and they don't care. "Misery loves company" is the perfect slogan for FFXI... the only reason people keep playing is because of the friends they've made in the game, banding together with those who've had to endure the same bullshit as you. I loved everything but the actual game, which is sad considering how endearing the characters, lore, et cetera are. Avoid.

If I learned anything from my time in FFXI, it's that MMOs, despite the good things that come from time spent with them, in general are exercises in futility and frustration. Probably not the response being sought, my apologies. Even with that said, I'll echo what lordkuragari said about Aion; keep an eye out for that. Closed/open beta hasn't been announced yet but it's expecting a Q4 release.

I played 2 years like crazy guy on FF11... maybe more.... shhhhh I don't want to say ....
I stoped some years ago.. like a drug this shit.

But this is a really good one, you have a good story, music is pretty cool, world really beautiful.
I really would like to play again one days T_T... you can stay here. Take your time to do stupid craft and other activities... doesn't mind it's cool ... (like a drug isn't it?)

Anyway, look at this website, it's really usefull place for Final Fantasy Xi

You can ask for a team and someone will probably help you! ^_^

Today I can say that : my english come from this game... not really cool english... but before playing to this game I didn't speak at all :) haha

I'd recommend tryin WoW again. I reinstalled about a month ago, only have played for about a total of 4 hours but it's kindof nostalgic, and it's interesting to see what Blizz has done with the game lately.

I doubt you'll get hooked again though. I don't see another MMO ever being capable of sucking me in to that dark hole again.

I think my longest stint was everquest for about 8 months, I did 2 of those a couple years apart... I got so sick of it...

Played ffXI for about 2 months... got bored

played wow for 5 months from release... got bored.. that's when I realized I could buy a real bow and shoot real arrows at real stuff, that turned out to be a lot more fun :P

One of the mmos I enjoy reading about though is EVE, there just seems to be so much awesome political backstabbing and espionage going on.

Asherr's MMORPG reviews of MMOs he's played: :poly142:

World of Warcraft: (currently subscribed but rather bored and thinking of quitting)
    + easy to play.
+ quick leveling. no real grindfests needed as you are leveling
+ all classes can solo almost 90% of non-instanced quests.
+ lots of humor through the quests and game in general.
+ no XP debt for dying. 1 to 10 minute (depending on level) debuff for dying and resurrecting at a Spirit Healer.
+ can run on almost any computer. the expansions need more power though.
+ open world. you can explore everywhere in the game that doesn't need a flying mount from level 1 provided you have a friendly mage to portal you and can avoid aggro.
    - not too many character creation options.
    - addictive?
    - reputation grinds (not as many or as hard since Wrath of the Lich King expansion. so Burning Crusade and old world reps have huge grinds though)

Star Wars Galaxies: (played the trial a couple weeks ago)
    + it's Star Wars.
    - consistantly disappointing since launch.
    - limited races for a StarWars mmo.
    - Combat Upgrade and New Game Enhancements completely changed the game from what it launched as.
    - 14 day trial is limited to 25 levels and Jedi get their first lightsaber at level 26.
    - Jedi get their first lightsaber at level 26.
    - way to pick an era with almost zero jedi around to base your game in.
+ space and owning your own ship.
    - common ships in the universe require max level space profession. (it's like needing to be a level 90 motorist to drive a pickup.)
+ lots of customization options at character creation.
    - too bad that all suck. I'm looking at you Human hairstyles!
+ owning a gungan frozen in carbonite and hanging it on your wall.
    + 16km x 16km worlds.
    - 90% of that space is empty. 10% of Endor is a large lake when there is no water based combat or missions.
+ get a landspeeder early in the game. speeder bikes and swoops can be bought cheaply at the Bazaar giving you complete access to anywhere on any planet you visit (excepting Kashyyyk and Mustafar).
+ combat is quick and if you get incapacitated it only takes a few seconds to stand and get to a safe spot to heal.
+ no XP debt for dying. 10 minute debuff that can be bought off at the medical center you respawn in.

Dungeons and Dragons Online: (currently playing the trial)
    + it's DnD. (using 3rd Edition rules)
+/- it's based in the Eberron world which is not a traditonal medival setting.
-not all classes are viable for solo play (ex: wizard and sorceror).
    - keeps overheating my ATI 4850 video card.
    - the traditonal 20 levels in DnD are broken down into 5 ranks per level giving you essentially a talent point each rank. new spells and abilities are given at each level. (basically means you go 5 'levels' without any new abilites).
+ decent graphics though the humans have gibbon-like arms.
    - XP loss for dying.

Warhammer Online: (played when the trial was released)
    + good graphics
    - trial limited to Tier 1 gameplay. (can't go out and explore the world.)
+\- not much humor that I saw outside the stupidity of the Greenskins.
    - subjective but when looking over the ingame maps it seemed that zone progression was rather linear.
    - my own experiance but Public Quests sucked. I got disconneted during several times and didn't get any credit for helping when i logged back in, died once and ran back only to have the chest disappear as soon as I got to it, failed to have my contributions counted several times. all in all I did about 5-6 Public Quests with parties and only got to roll once or twice.

City of Heroes/Villians: (played on a subscribed account and trials)
+ best character creation of any MMO
+ variety of powers to choose from
    - grindfest
    - XP debt for dying
    - wish there was a real auto-attack
    - for a superhero game I didn't really find the gameplay all that exciting.

    Ragnarok Online: (played during beta)
    + lots of classes
    - complete and total grindfest. I don't think there was an actual quest in the game when I played.

Final Fantasy 11: (played on paid account near launch)
    + nice graphics
    + Moogles!
    - grindfest
    - wasn't viable to solo past a few levels when I played.
+ can have two job classes

    Age of Conan (haven't played)
    + boobs!
    - 13GB trial download. :poly115: :poly115: :poly115:
    - ~40GB install for the actual game.

Everquest: (subscribed for a month, quit after a couple days)
    - old
    - ugly
    + lots of classes
    + still going

WoW! Still love it. They just released a new patch that added several new things. They do a good job of hitting me with something new right when I start to get tired of it. For me the appeal is that I can jump in and spend a few minutes or several hours playing.

I just haven't played another MMO that has grabbed me as much as WoW.

Wow, asherr, are you planning to write an essay on MMORPGs? It'd make an interesting read. Never played Star Wars Galaxies, was thinking about it, then lots of people were really pissed off with one of the updates, and it put me off. I might try Warhammer soon, my bro always had the big books full of fictional careers and stats. Haven't dared to play it yet, for fear of disappointment.

no essay, just made it up as I went. I might be a bit picky when it comes to MMOs. I want smooth combat (if I'm running around the animation of an ability shouldn't make be stop where I am, play the anmation and then let me continue to run. excepting abilities with cast times), open worlds with lots of stuff to exlpore/find, lots of good classes/races, and the ability to solo most non raid/dungeon content with those classes (though my level 80 Protection Paladin in WoW can to lots of those solo too :poly121:).

    *prays SWTOR doesn't suck. :poly122:

My first MMO that I got addicted to was Ragnarok Online, didnt know any better plus friends were playing it. It definitely is a grind fest, but if you have made some good friends its quite a fun socializing tool and shopping from personal-vendors on the streets of prontera was very fun, looking for bargains and praying for typos :p (http://tlg.xituation.com/UserFiles/Image/screenPRONTERA130.jpg)

But then I moved onto WoW and saw how vastly inferior RO was. I never considered going back to RO again, in fact after almost 3 years of WoW I could barely get myself to even try out another MMO. The fully customizeable UI in WoW is one of the main things I like, I'd spend hours each week tweaking my UI with new addons and stuff ;o

However after I finally got rid of the wow addiction I tried out some other MMOs; DDO, AoC and War.

DDO (dungeons and dragons online) was a very refreshing game to play after WoW. The "instances" were cleverly thought out and involved actual puzzles and real time "dodging" of environmental obstacles. I liked having actual traps that you have to detect and disable before progressing. Of course as you play more, you get used to the "instances" and you become confident enough to just walk through all the traps without a worry and then everything becomes boring again.

It would be cool to have randomly generated "instances" where the rooms, traps and monsters are always in different places etc :p But would probably be hell to make such a thing in 3D.

I can imagine that if you have a group of good friends all playing together for the first time, where each dungeon is "new" to them, DDO would be a great adventure. Joining existing groups who have people who know-it-all isn't very fun, and it turns you into a know-it-all afterwards :/

In AoC (Age of conan), I liked the directional combos at first, and the UI was fairly customizeable (probably a lot more now with addons etc). But once I reached 80, there was nothing to do :/ It wasn't because I did it too fast and there were not enough 80s around to play with, there was just simply no end game content at all. I spent half my time gathering resources for our guild fort in huge empty maps -.- And the other half repeating-and-resetting instances to grind for gear..

Warhammer Online was the last MMO I played, its very easily compareable to WoW with the controls/movement and fully customizable UI. It was quite fun, the pvp "BG"s (scenarios) were very similar to wow though imo, and open pvp was about the same too. If people were confident they could not win, they would retreat to the closest town for safety :/ End game content was a bit lacking, sieges weren't that fun with a mass zerg of randoms.
Some of the scenarios were quite fun but in the end it just felt like grinding (for renown).

The public quest idea was nice, kind of like a casual short-instance. But you get screwed if you disconnect during it, because you lose all the "points" you gained for the loot-roll in the end. Of course this isnt a problem for people with stable connections but at the time I played this, mine wasnt stable :p

I reached max-level in all of these MMOs and explored the end game content for each, WoW definitely has the most but it feels like work, especially if you're in a organized guild using some kind of dkp system. PVP in DDO is pretty much non existent, I'd say WoW wins in pvp too with the arena thing but warhammer aint far behind, especially if you're a fan of "zergs".
DDO wins in clever instance/dungeon design, RO wins in cuteness and AoC doesnt win anything :p
IF I was to choose to go back to playing MMOs today, I'd choose WoW.

i've found that unless you're playing with real life friends playing with people online generally sucks.

and the way wow is setup you can pretty much never play with anyone you know, unless they somehow managed to be on your server AND be the same faction, thats like 1/200 chance that you'll be able to play this game with someone you know who plays as well.

and come on, people suck, retarded dickheads yelling in vent? who needs that? i sure fucking don't.

I also raided classic wow and quit shortly after TBC. After 2 years of trying lots of other MMO's, I came back to Wow recently. It's changed quite a bit, and I find it enjoyable again, so here's what I've found different.

Now vs 2 years ago, positives:

    - instances are much easier and less punishing, allowing lots more people to do them.
    - instances are shorter, seems like 1 hour runs
    - the loot quality gap between instances and raids is much smaller now (thank god!). epics are easy to come by. I've seen at least one epic drop per one heroic instance run. And also many epic craftable items that aren't that hard to get the mats. Also, you can collect emblems and turn them into for epic loot as well
    - rep grinding is easier, you just wear a tabard and as long as you do a lvl80 dungeon or a heroic, you get rep for your chosen faction. Not all the factions have tabards but enough to satisfy
    - dual specialisation just been introduced. allowing people to have 2 talent specs, for a one time 1000g fee. Very nice for classes like warriors, priests...
    - overall, seems like many classes can fit many different roles now anyways..

    Things that still bug/bug me:

    - still need to use addons for many things that should be built in, ie: bars, quest helper. And then having them broken at every patch
    - 5000g for fast flying mount training in Northrend?! c'moooon! :)

On the horizon, there are some pretty interesting MMO's coming out. Star Wars being the big one. But also Star Trek, Champions Online, and that other comic MMO... Marvel or DC online?

There are also some free2play ones that you can try, but the only one I've found that isn't a total Korean grindfest is Runes of Magic, although I only played it for a month.

Another one of interest is SOE's Free Realms, which is I think is close to release and you may even be able to get into the beta right now. It seems like a kids game, but all the reports say that it'll have things for everyone

One of my roomies played on the same side and server as me and had seen me around. Pretty funny actually when we found out. It would have been even better if he was "THAT GUY" on the opposite faction.

I'm a huge fan of Age of Conan. The character and environmental artwork in AoC is light years ahead of any other MMO.

It's combat is also much more dynamic than any other MMO that I'm aware of. No turn based attacking in AoC. Each player can simultaneously attack, strafe, run :), etc.

When it's played on or near it's highest video settings, it's a phenomenally gorgeous game.

Age of Conan has also been greatly improved since its launch last May.
  • Rodin
Another great reason to try out Age of Conan now is that Funcom recently made a free trail available -

I was a solo bst to 75, then brd, then pld. Im on the Asura server... same handle as here actually.... Its a pretty crowded server still, which is nice... about 2k people online at all times.

The people that are left are great too, really easy going mainly....

If you go back with your wife, try to choose jobs that you guys can solo together. Bst, drg, blu, pup, or a combination of 2 jobs that can solo together...If you decide to seek for parties you will be disapointed with FFXI now, you cant play pick-up parties anymore really. Not from my experience. People play with their friends or statics... its hard to get through CoP too now... Try doing duo bst/whm to level 10 in sarutabaruta, if you learn the bst job from allahkazam website and make it to level 10 I bet you will never turn back. Its really the best way to see the entire game. I just roamed every zone for 2+ yrs that way, and so much to see. solo bst is a harsh learning curve but once you get it, its amazing. and its really easy when you have 2 bst/whm's. leveling whm sux but its necessary.

On another note, from my experience all the NM's are hunted primarily by playing characters now, Gill sellers have been almost exterminated by a combination of SE, market saturation, R/EX NM drops, and also by the fact that the majority of people playing now are interested in the game, not the jeuno fashion strutting that went on years ago... the GS still exist, but ya, not in large organized monopolizing guilds like before...

    great game. my favorite probably.

I still play FFXI on Shiva, not so much now with school and all since is a game that needs a few hours to actually do something that will be worth it. I usually leave it for break when I can get together with a few people from my linkshell and go level somewhere, do event battles, burning circles, NM runs, or just help other people with quests.
I actually left FFXI a month after I got it 4 years ago to try WoW out see if it was more fun for me. Was playing the trial and got bored of it the 2nd week, decided to play it a little more since some games are better at higher leve but didnt got to a fun part on 2 months so I when back to FFXI. Questing is big for me in MMOs and just getting onions for a npc from their own backyard is not to exciting for me. Is more fun to get slaughter on a ridiculous quest than have it easy for me. One of the reasons I like Ragnarok is because of this as well as I can play it during render time and stop when its done.

In case anyone would like to team up or needs people for a quest just send me a note, i'm pretty much free on evenings any day (8pm-2am PST)
