DWIV - 3D - meat

Well better late than never. I really wanted to participate in Dominance War this year but I doubt I will have time to finish :)

My idea is a cyborg medusa. My drawing skills aren't the greatest, hopefully my modeling will make up for it.

Suggestions and criticisms are always appreciated.

    Pete is this you? I like the direction you are going, as it is something that I am not seeing, but I might suggest that you have a few snake cords from the head not connected as it will help the medusa feeling to her more. I think you will be fine poly wise as you do not have alot of arms and legs, and maybe have the belly and ass showing more flesh ( with the snake vertabrae going between the glutes and up into her spine. Last suggestion and these are only just some ideas, but I would be curious to see a sharp spike at the end of her tail, as it would be cool to have that as a weapon as well.

    Thanks for the comments man. I totally agree with everything you said and i'm going to implement them as I move forward. I really like the idea of putting a weapon on the end of her tail, should look very cool.

    I have been doing some tests with her snake tail/body to make sure I can get it to bend properly without having a lot of clipping. Just some quick ideas.

    mmmm, robotic centipede butt.

    looking good. i prefer the honeycomb version out of the three, but i think they're all a bit too segmented. since the body itself is already such disparate chunks, having a bunch of tiny detail lines and pieces to each body/leg segment might drown it in details.

    Well I finally got a 3D model mockup up. Its still very rough. I really need to work on how the cyborg snake body seems up with the flesh body of the woman. The face and mouth sucks too and needs a lot of work.

    like the tail, recommend you go with a scorpoin like stinger instead though.

    pretty cool- I like the type of design on the tail. there seems to be some conflict in the design though - the tail looks like some sweet mech bits from Metal gear, then the bow with the scorpion heads looks like something from w.o.w or the like- Id definatly try and mirror some similar forms from the tail, into the bow-

    In fact- mirroring more of those bulky forms from the tail up into the top, for things like chest armor, shoulder pads etc etc would go a looong way.

    yeah, i totally agree with you Konstruct. I think pulling some of the tail shapes into the other parts will definatly help. I like kendo's idea for the scorpion tail too but it still should look mechanical like the rest of the tail.

    i think the bow could be more sci-fi-ish since the rest is pretty technology intensive a standard bow even as badass as that one dosnt really do it for me.

    Yeah I agree about the bow. I started working on some sketches but i'm not ready to post anything yet. I'm going to try and bring some of the shapes of the tail and body into it so it ties everything together. Thanks again for the input.

    Meat, great work so far. How did you do the stretched skin over the the cartridge thingy from which those wide strips come out?

    Thanks for the comments InProgress.

    The skin stretched over the wire plug things was done in zbrush by using the move tool to pull the head polys over the cartridge. I'm new to Zbrush so after I did that I realized my resolution was going to get less dense in those areas. If I had to re-do it I would probably add polys to the low poly head in 3Dsmax and stretch it over the cartridge first before bringing it into zbrush so the resolution in those areas would be uniformly dense. Does that make sense? I could be wrong though, there might be better ways to do it.

    Great work! I like the cables and wires parts coming out of the head.
    Isn't the tail a little bit too long? The lenght you chose on your
    drawing seem to be more balanced with the rest.
    Can't wait to see more.

    to garagarape: yeah your probably right about the length. I'm going to bake out the low poly with some of the segments as duplicates so I can add and subtract them at that point to figure out the best length. Thanks for the input.

    Here is wip shot showing the body. I still need to clean it up a bit and I am not sure if I am going to do much with the arms and hands.

    well it's been a few days. Here is an update. I really feel like im running out of time fast so I hope I get this finished.

    I did all the low poly work. I'm at 9771 polys so I might add a few little things like cables hanging down around her shoulders like spark mentioned earlier. She is really long to so I might do some test poses to see if I can take out some of her snake body parts.

    Here is a shot of her in max with the normal map turned on and a diffuse texture with the ambient occlusion baked in. I haven't started painting the texture yet.

    Here is a shot out of max of the low poly. A lot of my polys when to here cyborg snake body (more than I originally anticipated).

    This is a shot of her in zbrush. I still need to go back and clean up the details but i'm going to wait on that until I get more of the texture painted so I don't run out of time.

    I'll probably start painting the texture tomorrow. Hopefully I will have more to show in a day or so.

    well, I couldn't get it finished this year. Maybe I will try again next year. There is so much amazing work out there, it's very inspiring.

    Here are some renders of what I could get done. Texture needs a lot more work, I also need to fix the skinning and a bunch of other stuff.
