Hey guys,
So I'm working on my subdivision modelling techniques and have often come to ask myself certain things. I think people have mentioned it in their tutorials, tips and tricks discussion but I'm guessing this situation depends on the situation or what someone wants.
Once I'm done sub-d'ing my model up, I will bake the normals onto the low poly. Anyhow, in the picture are my two sub-d pieces. I really don't know how to describe what it is that I'm making but it all boils down to whether or not the cylindrical piece I have that is seperate from the plane I made, is it practical to have it as its own piece OR should that cylinder be coming out from the plane I made as all one mesh piece?
I'm guessing what I'm doing right now with this is what you would call floating geometry? And that's what I have going right now, but when normals are baked out from this, would it look just as good or would there be some weird errors?
Yeah I put like two, three questions in there, but hopefully I made sense. Also, the red circles I've made show where else that cylindrical piece would go on the plane. Any replies would be helpful, thanks everyone!

As far as whether you should use floating geometry or not... it depends on what you are making. If you want there to be hard edges in your sub-d model then yes, you should.
